Got off the phone, my partners out her mums who also does eBay alongside her husband. We stalk each others profiles to see what the others sell, they sell more as a hobby and tend to just buy anything thats going cheap (£3...) on the assumption it'll likely sell for more than they buy. She tipped me off to the local auctions as a source of inventory (she's living to regret it now)

The conversation basically drifted onto a vintage phone I'd sold a week ago for £50 that pissed her mum off as she "specialises on stuff like that" I sort of knew it deep down but I wanted to try get some smaller easy to ship stuff with a market and that fit the bill at the time, I was told she wasn't bidding on the auction so felt it was fair game at the time. turns out she never even placed a bid but the fact I had bought it has really narked her off as if I'm muscling in on her business.... I said I wouldn't be buying anymore (because the profit was negligible rather than its her thing)

I knew the exact phone she had bought and sold because she's only ever bought and sold one, what I found funny was digging back into the auction catalogue she spent £25 for it, after premiums and internet surcharges it would be close to £32-£33ish... she then sold it on eBay for £34.99 + £3 postage....

This therefore yielded (after postage and fees) about a £4 net loss... presuming the listing wasn't promoted!

Got the notification that the repair job on my LCD-X is finished and I can pick them up whenever I find the time. Just perfect timing for the release of Woodkid's new album on Friday.

The AZ-900 exam took less time than the verifying that I'm not a cheating scrub did.

2020 has been utter **** so far but one positive has come out of it. My wife and I have really thought about what is important and hence the M4 went today along with the finance outstanding. Going to clear the little Fiesta next week when I can speak to a customer adviser as the online portal to get a settlement quote isn’t working. Once sorted will have no debt bar the mortgage.

The networks are only just starting to install 5G in North Wales. Most networks still say "coming soon" or "no date confirmed".

I looked-up our postcode. In the Taunton area (we are a few miles to the west of Taunton) every network is at the good ol' "no date confirmed". Mobile signal here is weak and unreliable as it is.

I think my magazine scanning workflow is ready for doing it in anger now. To prove it: scanned the Analog double issue from July/August 2011 this morning.

    upload_2020-10-17_11-18-2.png

Processed the internals to 1-bit black-and-white, which removes the shading where you can see the back of each page through the thin paper and drops the overall file size to 23MB despite being nearly 200 pages scanned at 300dpi, while leaving the front and rear covers in colour. The thing has full text search, too - in that screenshot I searched for "floppy disk" and it took me straight to the page and highlighted the term.

Then I can load it onto my Remarkable, which has the added bonus of having a screen *bigger* than the original printed pages:

    upload_2020-10-17_11-20-25.png

This'll work, I think. Still feel bad about having to destroy the magazines to do it, but I've no room to keep 'em - at least this way I can still enjoy them whenever I want, and the paper can go off to be recycled into poop-tickets or whatever.

    Little wins:

Got a £60 dividend payment on free shares I didn't even know I had.

Unexpectedly had a free "voucher" for a McDonalds breakfast from work (scare quotes because the "voucher" is actually "pay for it myself then claim back on expenses").

Won £50 in either Love2Shop or Just Eat vouchers in a competition in work.

Had a £172 tax rebate for overpayments in FY2019-2020.

Think I'm gonna treat myself to a bluetooth system for my helmet. I've wanted a bluetooth audio system for a while now and this helmet just doesn't seem suited to mounting speakers under any of the pads. Sena have a system designed specifically for this helmet but it's over three times the price of your average externally-mounted bluetooth kit. It's also £40-odd cheaper on Amazon, but in this case bollocks to Amazon: I've bought pretty much all my bike gear from sportsbikeshop and they've been a brilliant retailer so far.

While that certainly is impressive and I understand your reasoning, I simply couldn't part with my books. I have one of the four rooms in our flat completely filled with bookshelves and even though I should really sell some of my signed first editions to make money while their price is high and to have space for new ones.... I can't.

I have no intention of doing it with my books, just the magazines. I have lifetime subscription to Interzone, so unless I do something I'm going to get buried under the things!

Oh, that's definitely understandable then. Says the guy with a lifetime subscription to a publisher of signed limited first editions, monthly delivery of one new book for the rest of my life. :naughty:

I couldn't do that - no room for the mags that keep arriving, ne'er mind more books. I sent twelve large packing crates filled with the things to charity when I last moved offices!

It'll make me quite a bit of money (if I can get myself to actually selling them) in the future. So I make room.

This was measured in the centre of Nottingham. I live about 4 miles outside the city centre, near to J26 of the M1 and I can't get a 5G signal here. It starts to come in about a mile down the road. I do still get a very good 4G+ signal around here though, speeds up to around 55Mbps.

I love that in the third picture it's neither thumbs up or thumbs down :D Like this scene from Gladiator:

Fun fact: thumbs down actually meant "spare him", not "kill him".

Miss bid on a box of what I presumed was camera cases... Loads of big value lots I wanted just went far too high and I wanted to go away with something. Advertised as “box of camera stuff” usually good at advertising the good stuff at this particular auction. Had to cough up a crisp £5 note for it in the end and reluctantly took it away to live forever in my loft. I’d paid £20 for a further box knowing a few gems lurked beneath but worse case I’d break even.

to my delight the £5 box of said cases and boxes were full of 35mm camera body’s and lenses!

granted had to advertise most as parts or not working because I couldn’t possibly know the ins and outs of half of it but combined the boxes a good bit of cash. Most lenses look well kept and within 5 minutes of listing I’d sold a camera/lens combo (untested parts not working) and lens bundle for over £100 both coming directly from my £5 pickup...

Yielded about 60 or so low value (£10-£50) easy to ship and sell listings from this pickup so pretty pleased and I’ve made almost my money back on everything I got from about a 20p investment so well into profit soon

A Goose, a duck and a brace of pheasants accidentally wandered in front of a shotgun and are now in my freezer.
