I was harsh before and I apologise. I get upset. Many people feel like they are "normal", but they have removed themselves from what is normal. There is nothing wrong with earning 30k, 40k, 50k, ect a year. Nothing wrong at all. You earn that **** and I don't mean to make you feel bad. And you 'feel' normal. And yeah you are. But the gap between you and everyone else is severe. Yeah you 50k a year dudes are still the same normal dudes as when you made 20k. But your perspective changes. Now you moan about the morgage, but remember us..the 20k a year guys. Your moaning becomes bragging. It is all relative, right? You moan about about **** when we can barely afford food. Perspective..keep it.

 

You jest now but, when 'Son of Ampere' (40xx series) comes along, the cooler will be an extra cost option.

 

You know what, I have a fixed, limited income though can save to buy things I want, just not very many. Not drinking, smoking, gambling or spending money on fast women helps. I don't worry about what others can afford to buy, they all work for their money, I just let it wash over me and take the pee when (in)appropriate.

 

What about the £0 a year dudes currently sitting on the ruins of destroyed careers? Do you think they’d like a slice of your £20k? I totally agree with perspective in these situations but you’re looking in one direction only.

I agree with your argument in some respects, I have colleagues pushing £70k a year and drop the “I’m skint, beans on toast for tea” as if it’s hilarious... it’s really not and even more so in the current crisis. People (including myself) have a weird habit of finding flaws in otherwise solid financial circumstance.

but please don’t disregard the blood, sweat, tears ,depression, anxiety, failure, stress, sleepless nights that comes with making in to that level. It doesn’t always come as easy as you’d think.

just because the money isn’t needed to survive doesn’t mean it wasn’t rightfully earned or deserved.

 

Blimey, I didn't mean to create a shitstorm when I posted that! Apologies for any offence caused.

The payrise is obviously very helpful to us as we are currently pretty much living to our means, I simply meant that with all that's going on in the world right now it's a mere drop in the ocean. It makes my life a bit easier but nothing more.

I enjoy my job and work very hard at it, but I'm also very grateful to be in a position to be able to work at the moment - my heart goes out to those less fortunate, I've very much been there myself.

I've been with this company for over 14 years and have worked my way up from the coal face to "big cog" gradually. It's nice to have my efforts recognised and my pay brought in line with what I could expect for a similar commitment elsewhere.

Congrats on your hard-earned success. Enjoy it! It's great when your hard work is rewarded, and just because someone else doesn't get the reward shouldn't mean that you can't be happy for what you've earned, especially in this thread of all threads!

Ok. Your frustration is misdirected. Since 1971 housing prices have increased by around 3800%, whereas wages have only increased by 1700%. The driver behind the inflated housing prices is an overabundance of credit resulting in increased mortgages and rent; Essentially a private sector tax paid to the rentier class. Land is where all the money is - Buying undeveloped land and waiting around until it's connected to infrastructure services at the expense of the tax payer increases the land speculator's investment by an average factor of 8, what John Stuart Mill termed "unearned increment". The reason government don't do anything to alleviate this is because 51% of the UK wealth is in it's land - The highest in the G7, for perspective France is second at 42% and the average is 39% - any attempt to make land less lucrative results in a disproportionate reduction in national wealth, compared to other countries - which is something no government wants to do. Lloyd George and Churchill tried to implement a a Land Value Tax in 1909, but the conservatives printed 50 million propaganda items labelling him a socialist. The bill was defeated in the aristocratic House of Lords, many of whom were land owners.

That's one end, the other is deflated wages, the reasons behind which I won't go in to because market forces are much more widely understood. We, in the UK, are uniquely squeezed at both ends, and the less we have to work with the greater the pressure. No one gets paid what they're worth, but the solution isn't 'having a moment' and pointing out how good other's have it. The solution is understanding the systems that dictate our quality of life and collectively mobilizing to improve them. One of neoliberalism's tactics is to make it all personal - Encouraging people to internalize their success or failure as something they are personally responsible for, rather than as a result of a dysfunctional, unequitable system of exploitation. I repeat:

Educate. Agitate. Organise.

 

A really wordy way of saying "suck it up princess". It doesn't account for the distribution of wealth. Which I wasn't even moaning about. My comment was about appreciating what you have..especially with regards to what other have.

 

Well, if that's your logic then you should probably stop moaning about being in the £10-20k income range. Others have less. It's peons all the way down.
