    There was a very lively debate, with the "no" side labouring this point specifically, in newspapers, multiple pamphlets etc.

    Then it would say:

    To promote growth and boost world trade in order to:
    • To bring together the peoples of Europe.
    • To raise living standards and improve working conditions.
    • To help the poorest regions of Europe and the rest of the world.
    • To help maintain peace and freedom

    I think the exception regime the NFU encouraged its members to apply under was an EU compliant process that other member states engaged in frequently as well. But yeah, not good either way if you're a fan of like, the planet we live on.

    I believe, from when the NFU first told its members to lobby the government for this, Greenpeace's figures showed it had been used just 37 times in four years across the whole of the EU. 1,200 NFU members signed the petition. That's a *lot* more, and in a much smaller area.

    True - looking into it further, the particular pesticides are ones that weren't included in the EU-wide ban but France chose to ban on top and is now walking back (temporarily - I read three years, but I'm on mobile and must admit I haven't bothered to seek out a primary source.)

    I'm concerned that it's the thin end of the wedge, though - there are 1,200 NFU members looking to use neonicitonoids, and they can't all be growing sugar beets...

    I only remembered a previous discussion i think on r/unitedkingdom when the letter was first sent and someone mentioned it was doable while in the EU as emergency measures, but I couldn't find any info in my quick google, however the France thing came up.

    Me too, but I was more thinking thin edge for more deregulation in general while thinking of the Hannan "we should bring back carcinogens" BS.

    And they're all in trouble. Unusually warm weather has increased the aphid population which bring with them a disease that affects the beets. Meanwhile outside the EU, cane sugar enjoys lower import tariffs, thus creating competition for local growers.
