Is there such a thing as a cheap, decent monitor?

Purpose is in the title really - have seen some on Amazon for ~£150/200, just wondering if they're any good at that price.

It's for an Xbox 360 plus homework, so not really looking to splash out.

Depends on your definition of 'cheap' and your definition of 'decent' i suppose.

If you are after a 23"-24" 16:9 1080p screen that isn't high refresh rate, then yeah, these are not expensive these days. If you have specific requirements then things might change!

She's under ten and on an Acer AL2416W at the moment so anything is probably an upgrade.

Probably try and stay 1200p if possible.

    Good point.
"Cheap" is under a ton or a good eBay deal, "decent" is anything that can do X360 games and some undemanding PC ones. Plus Squadrons (but at reduced settings... She's running twin 670s in SLI).

    Are AOC any good?

We're using Profile Inspector and it seems to keep things ticking over (ish). Got my Company of Heroes rate from a code-borked 40ish to about 140ish.

But you're probably right - at some stage we should pull these machines apart and have a review of the internals. We're still on Sandy Bridge! But it works though, so don't feel the urge to spend needlessly. It does make me sad that SLI isn't as much of a thing as it was though.

1200p isn't really a popular resolution these days, and 1200p monitors are like hen's teeth. You almost certainly won't get one under £100 unless you go second hand.

If stepping down to 1080p really isn't acceptable then 1440p is your best bet, although again probably not under £100. Basically, under a ton means 1080p.

This is why I suggested the 1440p panel. It's 75Hz like the current panel and will be the closest thing to the 1200p panel without stepping down.

    Aye, I personally don't think I could go from 1200p to 1080p. 16:10 for life :D

SLI is beyond that, its effectively dead from now onwards, and seeeing as multi GPU oin DX12 or Vulcan hasn't become a thing, multiGPU systems are a thing of the past for gaming!

Got my nephews one of them each a couple of years ago. Decent monitors, but AOC do an IPS version, (have one in my lounge at the moment) and it is way better. Don't think you'll really pick up anything better for the price.

I have been considering this 27" IPS 1440P / 95Hz / Freesync monitor, that seems to have good reviews. Apparently it's a rebrand of a Chinese model sometimes on Amazon.
It's been on other treads recently IIRC. I also heard they were panels that failed to certify at 144Hz and were repurposed at a lower spec.

Other than not having the money (unexpected car costs ), the thing that's holding me back is my GTX 970, which I think won't take the strain.

Good work, sir - thanks indeed. It's worrying you think the 970 won't cut it - do you mean on maxed out settings? Doesn't bode well for her 670s otherwise (although saying that, I did manage to get them working in 1200p on Ryse when I had them in my machine, so maybe there's hope...).

I did also find this, but going to try shopping around to see if I can bring the cost down:

It was going from 1080p to 1440p that made me upgrade from a gtx 970 to a gtx1080, but will depend entirely on what you're playing.

It's a jump of 75 percent in pixel volume, so check your current GPU usage in games. If you're sat at 50-60% usage you'll be fine at the same settings. If your usage is anything higher you'll have to drop settings. I found I could cope with reduced AA due to the higher render resolution which helped with framerates.

Desktop usage was fine, the extra real estate over 1080p is a godsend, and the pixel pitch on a 27" 1440p for me is perfect to use without resorting to scaling.

I did exactly the same thing as my GTX780 didn't have enough grunt!
