I'm currently running modest 1080P gaming / photo & video editing rig with the following specs: i5 8400 / H370 ITX / 2x 8GB DDR4 3000 / GTX 970. I also put together an initial Ryzen test rig: R3 1200 / B450M / 2x 8GB DDR4 3000 / GTX 1050Ti, which has impressed me with what it can do despite its limited specs. I'd like to upgrade one or other and end up with a better setup ready for a new GPU sometime in the next year and move to a 1440P monitor. I'm not that clear what the sensible upgrade path for the i5 8400 would be, and what the best option would be if I had £170 to spend on an R5 3600 or used better Coffee Lake CPU. I don't mind which platform I upgrade, but I'd like to spend the money the best way.
Have you tried 1440p yet? On my 6500t and s 1050ti I could run the division fine all be it settings turn down. Eve and wow all fine too (but hardly graphics intensive) I would say upgrade the Ryzen rig. You can go much further with it and get more bang for buck. Also if you are in no rush if supply starts to improve on the 5000 series you might pickup a bargain on a 3000 series
I'd do the Ryzen rig ... 3600 is a massive jump from 4 core 1200. If you do though, remember to update the boards BIOS beforehand.
Thanks fellas, that 3600 at Currys has taken a drop! I thought £165 last week was good going... I've advice elsewhere saying that the H370 does have an upgrade path via something mad like an i9 9900, if you can find it at the right money, i.e. £200. However, my inclination is that the B450 is a more open ended option, with an initial 360 and maybe something 5x00 later on. I haven't jumped on to 1440P (Still thinking about the Electriq 27" 1440p 95Hz IPS monitor at £185 or so), as I thought my 970 would not have the grunt. My friend whose 970 died is doing surprisingly well on PUBG at 1080P with my 1050Ti that he has on loan until he has the chance to buy something in reach later this year...he hopes. If I had thought more logically, rather than jumping in with a cheap & cheerful Ryzen build, a B550i to replace the H370i would have been more sense. There was an itch to scratch, in terms of making up a compact and portable mATX setup.
Ahhh, you have one? A geniine owner review! I was horribly tempted by the portable 15.6" as I don't have room at home for 2 large fixed monitors. The fact it was 1/2 the price of that 27" held me back. As the B450M is still at my friend's house, that is thankfully curbing my temptation to jump on the £145 3600.
I won't say I'm an authority on monitors (or anything else for that matter) but I think for the price it's fine. Tiny bit of ips glow in the corners. As with most reviews you are best off putting it on a mount. I can post some pics (once I clean my desk up) if heloful
