Listen, just remember: the mask goes over your nose, please.

I mean... I'm quite trashed, so at the moment that's all the rational conversation you're gonna get out of me on this subject :).

I still can't quite get over the comparison of protests and rioting owing to deeply institutionalised racism, a long standing and continuing level of aggression towards people of colour compared to white people, and flat out ****ing murder to people being selfish ***** and not wanting to stay at home for the sake of other people because '**** you, got mine'.

One of these two is definitely worth making as large a stink as necessary to get change, regardless of the current global pandemic.

I'll give the brain-challenged a hint: It's not the lockdown bitching and moaning.

Comparing the two just screams 'Racist ****' in my opinion, because it means you clearly do not recognise the importance of dealing with this utter ******** that is institutionalised, protected, racism, vs being told to stay at home to kill as few people as possible.

Who gives a **** if the economy suffers, if half the worlds population was wiped out trying to float it - **** would be ****ed then even if the economy wasn't.

One of the big problems here in the UK, is that the pro Brexit campaign and, ongoing right-wing Tory policy, has effectively promoted racism and made the racists feel legitimised.

Don't even get me started on that **** show..

There's an unhealthy rise the world over of racist, right leaning, politicians and I've no idea what the hell is wrong with people that they've forgotten what happened in the late 30's and 40's of the 1900's that there's even a hint of leaning into it in the 2000's.

Maybe time is cyclical. 1918 pandemic, 2020 pandemic.. Kind of glad I won't be around for the 2122 pandemic.

Incorrect. Netherlands shaken by third night of riots over coronavirus curfew – video | World news | The Guardian

The problem is that they are willing to impose that risk on others, too. And when they get seriously ill, they still expect to be treated in hospital, irrespective of the workload and risk that presents for staff.

stuartpb: "My mother is very sick, my children have caught it and I am really worried for my wife and me."

walle: "We're alright, thanks. Now for some racist trolling!"

    Honestly, dude: read the room.

Why are you wasting time on this guy?

Just report him for trolling/baiting and add him to your ignore list. Starve him of the attention he craves and he'll either take it too far and get banned or he'll piss off and spew his bile on another forum. Either way, we win.

    Good News:
We might not have to wait until 2122, because thanks to climate change the next pandemic is likely to happen sooner rather than later.

I think most people have been lucky with so far, hopefully your mom is out of the woods by now.
We're not blasé with either our health or that of the children, but we are willing to assume a certain level of risk to live and enjoy life. Tomorrow is promised to no one.
We were talking about England. Not the Netherlands.
The Dutch are all crazy anyway. :p
    What racist trolling dude?

If I had said "Chinese virus" or "China virus "the reaction would have been more reasonable since there's a double meaning there.

    But Chinese Flu? Common now.

No she's not doing well, she's in critical care now and on a CPAP machine to aid her breathing. Over the last 24 hours she's got much worse.

We aren't trying to wrap our children in cotton wool, nor are we trying to shield them from life and everything it can throw at them. We are trying to act on the evidence and advice given to us, to ensure we don't become someone else's problem and that we can try and get through this with some sort of normality. I happen to believe we weren't quick enough to act with lockdowns. I also believe that idiots who want to go out "protesting" are beyond contempt! We are in the situation now where some of our population have decided that the precautions we have to take don't apply to them. Yet I would bet my last penny that these people will be very vocal in demanding care and support should they and/or their loved ones contract the virus. It's absolute selfishness, childishness and arrogance the way these idiots are behaving. If I was a cop dealing with them, I wouldn't hesitate to administer some serious arse kickings!!

Also, why is it that these protests seems to attract middle class, privileged people. You know, people who wouldn't know their arse from their elbows when it comes to real struggle, real deprivation and real discrimination? I've met their type, they are just bandwagon jumpers, any excuse for a protest and they are there. Dregs of society!!

I am sorry to hear that, hopefully she will pull through.

Because they stand to lose more than the poor and the wealthy people.

It all ties in with post #4469 page 224.

So middle class people are protesting against racism, tighter protest restrictions and lockdown because they stand to lose more. Lose more of what?

I think some people have had too much time during the lockdown to think about how unfair everything has been on them while getting paid for not working or making a nice saving from working at home.

On the other hand some people were flat out either dealing with the pandemic itself in the NHS or other impacted jobs or trying to keep businesses alive to actually have an economy to go back to.

"What did you do in the lockdown? Work.'

    I have been busy myself.

The benefit of working in an industry that is close to recession -pandemic- proof, the other two would be prostitution and pornography.

There are millions of people less fortunate who all lost their jobs because of government policies, with government basically stealing a fundamental right you have, which is to make a living. Then the same entity that took that right got them stuck in government dependence instead.

..which in turn is paid for by those who are still working.

Government is not stealing your right to make a living; it serves its crony masters by monopolising it. Think of Marx' idea that workers should own the means of production. This does not just refer to factories and tools, or even agricultural land or livestock. It also refers to skill and knowledge. Someone who possesses a valued skill or expertise, can provide for themselves. Especially now tools and technology are becoming cheap*.

Now think of how education works in the most capitalist of countries: children are educated to be homogeneous factory and office drones. Especially in the UK this is a hangover of Empire, which needed a vast, dispensable workforce for its new industrial age factories, servants and housemaids with basic home economics skills, and a small, but highly competent base of legal and financial expertise (with some medical and artisan skill thrown in) to serve the wealthy elite. Training of the latter was reserved for the middle classes, who could be relatively trusted because they knew who buttered their bread. We still see that reflected in British education today.**

Apprenticeships have been killed off. Education in real skill and expertise costs, and is becoming prohibitively expensive except to the wealthy who can afford it (whereas a smart country makes good education accessible and free; a skilled workforce is an economic and strategic asset).

Many people are now employed, commodified really, by large companies, at rock-bottom prices. They have no skills to go and do anything else. They're kept working as "key workers" to keep the capitalist machine going, continuously exposed to risk without protection. And when companies crash, the workers' tenuous livelihoods go too.

    * EDITed for additional comment, and to give credit to Vipersgratitude, whose previous posts have got me thinking a lot about this.

** Margaret Thatcher was even quite explicit about this, pivoting education in the 80's towards a service economy. Home economics became not about learning to cook, but learning to design pizzas for a fast food industry (the boom in 80's home computers in the UK was a product of Thatcher wanting to create a workforce with basic IT skills).

    That's government for you.

I can't think of of any business more effective than government. None.

It's everywhere and each year it grows larger and larger and imposes itself more and more on people. It can take anything it want with zero limitations, with no consequence and it can't be held accountable. The notion that government would limit itself is laughable and demonstrably untrue.

People in general seem to think government is incompetent, but that's because they think they should be the beneficiary, but government serve government, government is the beneficiary.

There's people who believe bigger government would be the answer to their problems and to the 'failures' of their own national governments but that's asinine. It would simply scale the problem moving it from nation state level to....

As a conservative I often clash with fellow conservatives, they are so fixated with private this and private that, and yes, private businesses are great (true capitalism) and the way forward imo. But private businesses means mom-and-pop stores, small contractors etc. Most fellow conservatives think "private" corporations are somehow private so they staunchly defend them, but they are not.

    Far from it.

They are (as you hinted at at the beginning of your post, unless I misinterpreted you) very much part of government, i.e. those who govern.

The sad part is most people either don't want a solution or are not open to any ideas, their 'solution' is to vote every four years. They honestly believe it will change things, it wont, voting never solved anything, let alone the ever increasing growth of government and it's interference with peoples lives.

My idea would be to find a way of getting back to local government, this way the people could keep an eye on government, there would also be room for proper representation and consent. You can't have proper representation and consent when you have a central government in place controlling millions of people.

It can never work it's doomed to fail. Period.

Conversely, those that argue for a 'smaller state' government are either disingenuous or naïve, because, as you allude to, big corporations and government are two sides of the same coin. Smaller government means less regulation, and more freedom for large corporations to do what they want. Bigger government means more regulations, which large corporations will do their best to shape so they can do what they want. The latter is more difficult, hence the push for the former.

Local government controlled by a local electorate is preferable, but some issues need to be tackled on a larger, national or international scale: pandemics, pollution, the sheer power of global corporations. The difficulty is to get local governments to work together in their common interests.

Well I had my second stabbage yesterday and feel suitably grim today, hooray?

Going through town on my way to get it was very depressing. Lockdown is over, so people are being idiots straight away, we're heading for another lock down by mid summer even with the jabs going on.
