Unfortunately I feel this will be the knock-on effect in the long term.

Next generation, $500 mid-range (xx60 ti) card may become the norm. Maxing out games may never happen for us mortals.

Intel, you are our only hope. :eeek:

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. At least they have their own fabs.

Its not even just fabs, its other components too!
I thought this was well known by now, as it'lll take that long for the new fab capacity to kick in! Even more so long terms, as these new fabs they're building will take the better part of an decade!

Another factor is that the sort of people who have the cash to spend on £500 GPUs are also the sort of people who have saved up a lot of cash over the pandemic, and are likely also to benefit from the economic rebound. For how long will people be prepared to pay over the odds for things while they are flush with cash?

I have seen a similar phenomenon in another hobby of mine, coffee. There's a very popular grinder for home use that now sells out within minutes of batches being put up for sale. Buying one in April, before the rush really kicked off, is one of the best choices I've made!

Oodles of bits and bobs, but with tsmc creaking under the strain, it's one pinch point out the loop. Probably won't see consumer cards till late 2022 anyway.

Sorry, I should have been clearer, one of the big problems currently is the lack of memory, its whats doing Apple in, so unfortunately Intel may still be affected by that!

I don't think intel has allocated capacity for XE GPUs in its own fabs - pretty sure I read they're contracting it out to tsmc or Samsung

Ah, my -2 reading comprehension stats strike again. Sorry.

I suspect prices will go down when people stop buying them, whenever that may be.

I'm happy to say that even though it took three months, my £749.00 EVGA 3080 FTW3 will be THE GFX card in our house for the next ten years unless something goes wrong with it... the cost per use ratio will be nice and tiny!

I still haven't turned on the new PC however... doing all the maintenance on the old one for the boy to have!

Yes, one of the oodles of bits and bobs, along with all the other component and PCB shortages. Still one pinch point out of the loop.

    Or maybe not.

Yep, we've been doing pre manufacturing prototyping at work and some of the parts I've have to hunt for are so weird! USB C violtage spike IC's and particular USB ports, 48v voltage regs (we had to nab 4 of the 5 globally!), really weird whats short!

Given the microscopic quantity that is probably the review samples, so those cards will arrive as intended.

The containers with the cards for real people however...

Cheaper at Overclockers for "only" £630 but yeah, prices are a bit crazy.

But then what does it have to compete against? Not actually launched yet slowpoke furnace 11900K? Imaginary Zen 3 Ripper?
