My new B560 case is taking shape. It’s still waiting a panel or two to come back from anodising but it looks good!

    Looking good, @Goatee!
It'd be interesting to know about anodising costs, if you're happy to share that with us.

    Order 2 official Big 560s?

Not me, I just DIY & go!

Ahhh yes, the "Ooops we done them all silver, not black" anodising

2 sets of UK cut panels ordered, should be a couple of weeks.

I'm looking at powder coating, to see how that works out

How much does powder coating add to the panel thickness? Just wondering if it'd be enough to cause issues sliding the side panels into place.

Hydro-dipping? Obviously with hydro sheets not rattle cans....

I haven't spoken to any local coaters yet, but 50 microns is a typical powder coat thickness = 0.05 mm With 1.6mm alu sheet we have up to 0.4mm wiggle room to fit it in the extrusion slot.
Basically, thin paint or powder coat with be 1/10 of the max thickness.

We may need to put tape down the insides to stop it rattling...?

Hydro dipping may be tricky with all those holes to punch out of the film

With powder it all depends on how they do it. If they use a primer? it will be thicker. That said I can't see an alu case rusting so I doubt they would do that. There's a PC company on the IOW because Tom Logan uses it.

50 on the front, 50 on the back and both front and back of corner post channels coated means you have 0.2mm left?

or are you going to mask the channels?

Good point there...panels having 2 sides

BUT I shall not be coating the channels, as I intend to experiment with different sets of panels and finished for a while.

So, they will be left as supplied for the time being.

I may still want to shorten the whole thing as I won't be putting a rad up top, but won't know how I feel about the size and proportions until I have built the standard one.

Tried the island based powder coaters several times this afternoon - no pickup, no answerphone. Hmph.

Spoke to the local the powder coating firm, and job looks like it falls under their minimum order charge of £36.95.

No idea if that's a good or bad price for coating, but it doesn't seem too bad for a one off expense.

OK, that sets a start point £37.
Did you send them the plans or quote a rough area of metal to be coated?

Just a rough area, and no additional prep.

That's pretty cheap. I've paid up to £100 for a BMX frame.

The paint would cost you a tenner, then all the mess etc.
