At least these siblings survived mostly unscathed, unlike the poor buggers killed in India.

These stories remined of a favourite Terry Pratchett quote:
“If complete and utter chaos was lightning, then he'd be the sort to stand on a hilltop in a thunderstorm wearing wet copper armour and shouting 'All gods are bastards!”

And the armour would probably help him out quite nicely if he were to be struck, Sheet materials make for fantastic lightning protection conductors due to their low impedance at lightning frequencies...

Now that's the sort of thing I might shout on a hilltop.

Sorry, I must have missed that day at school, what is the most basic advice about lightning?

Run around in an open field waving a long copper rod, iirc. Although that advice came from Mr Phabes, our physics teacher, and he didn't like me very much.

My own fault, the article does actually have some of the basic guidance, but I would argue it's not particularly well know and it wasn't clear in the article whether they were sheltering from the rain, and then lightning happened rather than sheltering from the lightning, if you get me.

Oh, look, it's another one of these:

How did the 30-year-old retail manager buy a $474k Calgary townhouse? She didn't. Her parents did, putting up $120k of their own money and $60k of her partner's grandparents' money.

It ranks right up there with 'look right, look left, look right again', don't use water on a chip pan fire etc etc, all pretty much common safety stuff imparted to us at a young age.

Yeah that's pretty much it, although, like a lot of those "rules" it is told to us without being told why. Most people think that it's because a tree is likely to be struck and that means that we could be as well or bits of the tree could fall off. That is only partially true and not the main reason. The main reason being that the tree acts like it's own lightning protection system in that the top (air termination) gets struck, conducts the current down to ground level via the sap wood layer (down conductor) and into the root system (earth termination system). The big problems occur when this current is dissipated into the ground and causes issues with step and touch voltages as the voltage decays away from the earth rods (roots in this case). It can create a potential difference between your feet, this is why animals are often at more risk than people due to their front and back legs being further apart than our legs and their conduction path passing through their chest.

At the age I think it was drummed in to us I don't think we'd have understood why, don;t do it because you might get stuck was good enough, K.I.S.S.
But they were different times, we did as we were told (unless we thought we'd get away with it), adults were to be listened to etc etc etc

    Oh the irony!

"The UK is committed to fighting the blight of corruption and holding those responsible for its corrosive effect to account," Mr Raab said.

"Corruption drains the wealth of poorer nations, keeps their people trapped in poverty and poisons the well of democracy."

You forgot "It's full of Bill Gates's microchips that will kill us all as per Agenda 21".
