    To be honest, if it was me the walls would be stripped back to plaster and redone, carpet replaced, curtains thrown away and all painted surfaces sanded and repainted. What about the toxic chemicals absorbed that DON'T produce a smell?

    I know you will say cost is the reason, it is always the sticking point, but the bulk of the cost of doing it right is labour. If you can reduce that with your diy skills, the material cost can be manageable.

    You have to get a new carpet and clean then paint the room.

    We tried all sorts in our old place to remove the smell of dog but that was the only way in the end.

    Yeah, we're going to repaint with an oil-based paint after the sugar-soap cleaning and ozone treatment. Hoping that a shampoo will fix the carpet, as it's pretty new - but if not we'll get that replaced too.

    I'll have no choice but to pay someone to do it, though - I'm working near-20-hour days at the moment.

    Don't forget the radiators. In our place we stripped the walls and carpet of every room, repainted/replastered etc and that would eliminate the smoke smell except for the first day the radiators come on in autumn. The dust / nicotine sticks to the fins and is a bugger to resolve. We resorted to doing a direct replacement (as the old radiators were a bit knackered anyway) but I'm sure you could wash them down somehow. Look up on youtube how to remove radiators because its fairly easy (if you can use a spanner) so no need for a plumber.

    There are signs that several of the (ancient) radiators have leaked in the past and may or may not leak when the heating's on again, so we'll probably just replace the thing. What's one more expense on the pile, eh?

    All this is sounding very familiar.

    "Just this, because.." and then it's all 'ah crap the house isn't liveable'.

    Tbfh, replacing radiators is a doddle, I'd not even be remotely concerned about doing it.

    If the detailers I watch are to be believed, the ozone generator should do most of the legwork, I'd expect the carpet shampooing and radiator replacement should do the rest.

    Bloody smokers.

    Right, sorted: we need the heating looking at anyway and an unknown number of radiators replacing, so job one is getting a plumbist to service the boiler and rip the radiator off the wall. Then we've found a guy, sadly not available until early August, who'll do the job proper-like: sand all the surfaces down, even the ceiling, seal 'em, paint 'em. Then get the plumbist back in to replace the radiator with a new one that doesn't stink of fags and however many other radiators need replacing before the heating system can be trusted, plus a flush and inhibit. Then we're going to replace the carpet in there and in our bedroom, which doesn't stink of fags but has a massive sticky brown never-going-to-come-out stain where (I hope) the radiator leaked. Oh, and might as well get the dog-smelling threadbare carpet in the conservatory replaced as well while they're doing it.

    In related news... anyone wanna buy a kidney?

    A little undecided on the handles still. Ordered a sample of one of each, so can stick them on the existing cupboards to get a feel for them before deciding.
