Thanks @sandys, lots of shielding is a good thing.
I had blithely assumed that as the 6 pin PCIe was 3 of each, you'd have 4 of each on a PCIe 8 pin, which is for more demanding cards.

**EDIT** It seems that more grounds allow higher current flow and some are sense lines.
Also, it seems that the 6 pin PCIe connector can handle more than its original spec 75W, which is why the 8 pin can carry 150W with those extra grounds

Interesting. Need to see actual numbers though. The thing that holds me back from going balls-deep with AMD is raytracing, in the past AMDs raytracing performance hasn't been as good as Nvidia. I know it can be gimmicky, but implented correctly it's absolutely gorgeous - Cyberpunk 2077, for example, looks like a completely different game with raytracing enabled.

However.

Nvidia have well and truly f'ed their reputation over the last couple of years with some seriously shady and nakedly greedy tactics. I have very little desire to give them any more money.

 

Hum..... The 7900 XTX 1.5x - 1.7x faster than 6950 XT.
Looking on TPU GPU DB, 6950 XT is 65% of 4090 at 100%. So 7900 XTX will be 97% at worst case in AMD showed benchmark.

So almost 4090 performance for 95w less. Nice!

 

That's if you believe AMD's vague af asterisk and caveat strewn numbers ofc.

But 80% as good for 60% of the money is still a tempting prospect for a lot of people.

That was the worst presentation I have ever seen.

8k FSR FSR yada ya. Everything they showed was using FSR, which is total crap. I used it once and it made me feel very ill.

That said when I see the actual performance I may actually be impressed, and I think the prices are very reasonable.

I don't think Nvidia will be dropping their prices. Firstly it will be ages before you can buy one of these cards at anything closely resembling the RRP and secondly Nvidia will not change their 70%. They can't, because of the share holders.

What I am 99% will happen is they will replace their entire current lineup with a new one in order to keep their prices where they are.

So don't be expecting bargain RTX any time soon, unless you buy a 30 series card.

Also, these are not the cards people buy. I'm more interested to see the 7 and 8 cards. Because if the main die is much smaller yet it keeps those cheap AF chiplets around it they could be very cheap.

Overall though I'm quite pleased. The only thing I am concerned about is the I word. Interposer. They've long been problematic for AMD.

 

I'm still waiting for the true replacement of the GTX 1060 6GB.

Good enough for cheap enough, still number 1 on the Steam Hardware Survey. Hell, the 1050ti, 1650, 1060 and 2060 make up almost a quarter of all Steam users. Cheap-ish GPUs need ot make a comeback already.

 

Pricing has me intrigued and the overall performance of up to 1.7x RX6900XT (so we can probably assume a more likely 1.5x uplift in practice) is certainly a nice jump.

RT performance is still a question we want answering but honestly outside of turning it on in CP2077, going "oooooo" and then wondering where my FPS went (on a 3090 for context) it is not at the top of my wants for the card. But then I am more than happy to play through the entirety of Control at medium settings 40/40 on the Steam Deck because that is far more impressive to me. It can also play CP2077...

My hope is a nice overall performance bump, not crazy power draw and a card that will actually fit in a ITX chassis. Oh and not cost ******* £1600...

 

Yes please to good enough / cheap enough that is power efficient and ITX friendly as suggested above
