Does anyone else think Asus seem to be losing the plot with this 'netbook'. At £449 it is far too expensive for what it is, especially when you consider for less than this you can pick up fully fledged (albeit lacking DVD drives) core duo based 12.1" laptops.

This netbook is £180 more than I paid for my Advent 4211 yet I fail to see where this difference lies (I will concede the battery life will no doubt be better).

Its probably more for the professional type person who bought an eee for his kid and thinks its pretty good. Now he can get the 'grown up' version that looks more bad-ass :p

I got a 901 a couple of weeks ago to replace my 701 and thats a big improvement, not just with the screen, but with the design and the build quality. That was well worth the price premium over the 701 and i'm sure there is a reason for this one too.

I'm also happy they keep updating their modified Xandros with new stuff, i thought they might be doing it just to get cheaper Windows licenses, but it seems like they are taking the platform seriously.

I think the build quality of the S101 is streets ahead of just about every other Eee, but it does come at a huge price premium. It doesn't stop me wanting one any less though... :(

meh- Samsung Q45 for £100 more. 12" screen, 3GB ram etc. It does weigh a bit more but it is perfectly manageable

Maybe I missed it, but there was no photo of the machine, sat on a desk with its keyboard and display showing (working).

This criticism was raised the last time you reviewed an eee model as well. Show the machine in use, and not just closed !

Sooo, basically, the 901 is the machine to get.
The 1000 is Windows only, right?

the 1000 is linux with an SSD and the 1000H is the windows model with a standard 80GB hard drive

I have the 1000 and i paid £350 for it. As sexy as this machine is; an extra £100 for a worse battery and a shiny case?! Come on Asus pull the other one

I don't see it... £450 when you can buy 901 for £280? No way.

My 901 arrived yesterday. I liked the look of this one but my 901 is beautiful :)
    (And a chunck cheaper too)

(Now I've just got to get my 2gb of ram and 16gb sdhc card and I'm happy as can be)

Last image link (eee in its case) fails - .jpb typo, needs changing to .jpg :p

These netbooks are taunting me - the 701 came out just as I was playing with resurrecting an old Fujitsu B110 with Damn Small Linux. Loved that, but it was just never going to do much, up to & including full web compatibility! By the time I had the cash ready the market was flooded, bah.

This one, though? I have to agree, the price is too high - not for the product, but for the name. Cant the bring out an EEE Elite range or something, delineate it at least a little? Sorry, "EEEL337"...!!

i considered the msi but the battery life is nowhere near what i would need, same goes for all the rest of the 10.2 netbooks

No picture of the unit actually open? No picture of the unit on?

    FAIL.

    Good review though.

Make it $499 and it'll sell. Anything more, and its a bust.

    This is getting ridiculous...

the 1000 is not available in Germany.
the 901 in linux finally is (called the 901Go), but costs more than te windows based one.

    901Go - Linux 16GB (4GB Flash + 8GBSSD) 400€ (320pound)
    901 - Windows (12GB 4GB Flash + 8GB SSD) 355€ (284pound)
    1000H - Windows (160GB harddrive) 430€ (344pound)
    1000 linux…not available -
