    Yes. Basically, it's a change to the software stack which means it will have to be implemented in firmware at both ends of a Bluetooth connection before it will work; however manufacturers will need to have their products recertified to demonstrate Bluetooth 4.2 compatibility, meaning that from a consumer's perspective it will require new hardware 'cos nobody's likely to go through the hassle and expense of recertifying an existing product when they can just make it a selling point of their next one instead.

    That's what I was thinking as well...

    Certain things like smartwatches and smartphones could feasibly be updated, but things like headsets/headphones or some connected appliances may be less lucky...
