Surely it should be illegal to store unencrypted personal data.

If you listen to our stupid politicians all encryption should either be made illegal or come with a backdoor, after all we know encryption is only used by terrorists and paedos.

Maybe Carphone Warehouse were thinking of that before they put in place additional security measures, they certainly don't seem to have taken the security of customer data extremely seriously prior to being attacked.

Their stupidity aside, it should still be possible to maintain their requirement to access all data and for businesses to encrypt private user data. The government just has to ask for a copy of the database with the keys.

Yea because governments have a hundred percent record when it come to keeping computer records safe don't they, they're reasons we don't provide a copy of our house keys to the government you know.

Like you initial said TPTB should be helping to make us safer in the digital world by making things like transmitting & storing personal data unencrypted illegal, not making it sound like only criminals use encryption or that it's wrong to use encryption.
