That's why i've been a bit quiet online, it took all my energy dealing with someone who doesn't back up Brexit talk with anything other than opinion, while spending alot of fun time with an EU citizen.

Trying to explain why it affects her son and his partner was draining, especially when she just views facts as equivalent to her opinion.

Isn't that modern politics in a nutshell?

 

I learned some time ago that some debates are not worth having. My niece-in-law voted Brexit because she wanted "political change". She didn't think Leave was going to win. I'm supposed to be her favourite uncle-in-law, but it never crossed her mind to consider the impact on me. I've decided it's not worth having that conversation; I have just been avoiding her until I feel able to be civil towards her again.

My mother and brother in the Netherlands (both great Anglophiles) urged me to simply apply for British citizenship. I told them I'd rather get kicked out the country than lose my EU citizenship rights, especially as I don't plan to stay. They didn't quite get it. Again, I'm not having this conversation with them; there's no point.

You just have to do your own time, and nobody else's; do what is right for you and your partner.

 

Yeah. Trouble is I point things out, she says "that's not what I read/was told, i didn't realise" but still doesn't change her opinion.

A very tiring week.

Nah, they'll say that we'll still be a gateway to Europe when we leave and how we'll also be a gateway to the rest of the world.

 

Something that also goes for the huge financial industry that currently have European headquarters in London.
And for anyone thinking "the bad parts of Brexit have already happened due to uncertainty, we may as well get it over with it's not going to get worse": you ain't seen nothing yet.
The build-up of overseas capacity (both infrastructure and literal thousands upon thousands of physical desks with machines sat at them) has been astounding over the last couple of years. The Fortune 25 I work at could literally move ~85% of their UK staffmembers (all 10k+ of them across national sites) to EU locations today if they wished, and are still building out additional sites as fast as they can contract physical installs, and they are hardly alone in this.

Give the job to the Agricultural Ministry, they're not in charge of Gundam so clearly they need something else to do.

 

If by "gateway" they mean the bend-over-and-spread-the-butt-cheeks kind of gateway, then sure.
