how to build a wood kayak

Can anyone point me in the direction of finding plans for making a wooden kayak? I am going to make one for my woods class but I need a rough starting point and some general dimensions.

Doesn't a kayak have to be fairly light...? I've had one in the sea before and even plastic is pretty rough to ride in.

 

wood kayaks actually weigh less then some kevlar,fiberglass, etc kayaks

 

i dunno how advanced your woods class is, but don't you think that might be a bit too ambitious of a project? my dad is a shop teacher, and he's afraid to try it. one of his friends spent a few years working on his. turned out beautifully though.

 

its a college and I have lots of free time for the whole semester and all the weekends to work on it. The teched class has built one or two ceder strip canoes and they look awsome.

 

How about a basic wooden frame with a canvas skin?

 

if you can finish a cedar-strip canoe in a semester you are my hero.

good luck to you... kayaks are hard enough to make out of plastic.. a think a canoe would be simpler..
