With Outlook Express I like to peek into the message source of suspicious e-mails (right click/properties/details/message source). The e-mails from good, hardworking, honest people usually show some slightly mangled, but legible ASCII text. On the other hand, e-mails from vicious, lazy, lying spam sponsors often show just a mess of characters. Sometimes I could later identify them as a picture. I guess they could be JPEG, GIF, WAV, ... anything that Windows can deal with. Is there any way to feed the characters into some other piece of SW to check out what they really mean, of course w/o opening the e-mail, just cut/paste from the source? The point is that I don't want to give any notice to the sender that I looked at the e-mail.

I would hate to miss a really good deal on Viagra just because I'm too timid to open an e-mail. :D

You could try mailwasher, lets you check your emails on the server, then decide if you wan't to download them or delete.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll try the mailwasher. Norton just seems to wipe it all out, which is good for safety, but bad for my curiosity. :D
