I'm new to the forums but I have been doing some modding for the last six months or so. I'm contemplating several projects, including one that was inspired by the Vesper HTPC, which just plain rocks.

As a network technician, I have access to a wide variety of older cases that are just crying out to be placed back into service and modded for current use. The most notable one, and the largest, is an old Compaq Prosignia 740 Series Server case. It's free so I don't much care what happens to it, I just need some ideas on mods or themes to get me off on the right foot.

Thanks in advance to everybody for contributing.

I'll get some pics up and running as soon as I get them downloaded off the camera this evening.

What about doing something really radical like cutting the side panel and putting perspex in there instead, so its like a window into your case!

Seriously, i think the best mods these days are original ones, that no-one has atempted or only thought about doing.

I have an entire room of scrap pcs I picked up off the road (bulk trash pickup = modding junkies best friend) that are in the same situation as that prosignia. I have an old IBM tower thats 2.5ft tall, and the tape drive is still in it :)

    Experimentation is the best way...

    Heya,

If you have so much access to cases and alike then you could pick up a few and hav a bit of a muck around with them - since rendering them completely and utterly useless is of no concern, you could really get your mind onto things / try things out and see if you like them on some other cases before moving onto your final project - the server case. Once you get started (if your anything like me) then you wont be able to stop :dremel:

Then the ideas will really just flow... The advantage to this is that you'll be able to create something that is really you, and not an imitation of something that someone else has done that your not sincerly happy with.

Having said that, do draw on others ideas as well as this should help you / spark your mind on new and better things. As Bossman said, it doesn't have to be completely original - as long as its what you want it to be. Plan and experimentation in my short - lived experiance is the best key to making something that your truely happy with as well as developing your case modding skills.

That is all from the study driven case modder... :wallbash:

Brainstorm or Brainfart? You make the call

OK, so I was sitting around the other night and in a flash it came to me... Why not mod the side panels to work like gull-wing doors?!?! I could purchase a very small hydraulic pump that could even swing them open with a remote control. I know it sounds hugely ambitous, but I've got nothing but time, and all sorts of cases to experiment with.

Let me know what you think, or if somebody has already tried putting this together.

    Sorry about the late reply

    Sorry about the late reply!

I think your on to something. It will probably cost a bit to do... but like most good things - they cost money!

I bid you good luck on your case modding endevours. Let us know how it turns out!
