Linux linux wont install

    I have a very old 99' dell p3 with 640mb of ram

    I want to install ubuntu but I put int he disk and boot it wont I went in bios changed it to boot cd drive first


    it just doesnt want to install

    any ideas?


    the disk works I just tested it

    Make sure you burned the disc right.

    not burned disk

    both work too the xp is a legit xp copy and the ubuntu copy is one they sent me *shrug*

    how far do you get? can you get to the first screen, or do you just get the "no boot disk" message?

    I dont get ANYTHING at all boots up like normal

    Does the CD drive work? its getting on a bit wouldn't be surprised if parts if it had started to fail.

    nope cd drive works great


    this is really pissing me off im going to slap another drive in just incase though

    try the alternate install disc

    new cd drive new disk


    I tried a xp disk a win2k disk a xubuntu disk and a ubuntu disk


    not working someone told me they had this problem and they wiped the hardrive and it installed but I dont want to wipe off the old os if I cant install anything else!

    try disabling the hard drive in BIOS, installs should still detect it.

    Have you told it to boot from the optical drive before the hard disk?

    yeah I have I tried disabling the hardrive in the bios didnt work


    I think the only way to fix it is to wipe the hardrive or get a new hardrive which I need so I will wait till I can get a bigger hardrive then ill put linux on it

    if disabling the hdd in bios didn't fix it, a new hard drive won't fix it either. is the cd drive the master of it's channel?
