very... umm interesting. This will either be a very very good move, maximizing single player experience and multiplayer performance. Or a utter failure, not much chance for just a good game. Its either great or trash, so much for preorders...

Bizarre. Given that a game's SP is treated as training for MP, this may feel a bit weird.

Frostbite allows for destructable environments - UE3 doesn't - I guess this is why they've chosen the two. Makes you wonder how the new game's MP will be any different to that of BF:BC 2 though - same engine, similar setting...EA could end up competeing with its own franchises.

Too bad that UE3 is such a terrible engine...and old nowadays.

People should start using a modified cryengine tbh.

I wouldn't have thought the game engines themselves take up much space at all?
As far as i'm aware, the lions share of a games file size is taken up by sound, texture and model/animation data. as long as the models/animations can be tweaked to work in both engines, it shouldn't add much at all

CryEngine will make your PC Cry.

It's named that way for a reason.

UE3 is constantly updated and it's nowhere near as ancient as Source which is basically a suped-up version of the Quake 3 engine.

even earlier - valve had the rights to the original quake and quakeworld engines code. not long ago someone (not sure if it was from valve or id) said they could still see original code from quake in the source engine. i guess if something aint broke then dont fix it.

Destructible environment for multiplayer but not for singleplayer?
Shouldn't that be the other way round? (in terms of MP data volume)

I thought HL1 was a modified Quake II engine (OpenGL)
and the Source engine was made from scratch by Valve (DirectX 9)

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

when they released HL1 the engine was branched into GoldSrc (any HL1 game, CS 1.6 etc), and Src (HL2 etc). GoldSrc was obviously the engine which had gone gold in HL1, this was frozen. Src (later Source) had all the experimental stuff they worked on in HL1 but didnt have time to polish. The Source engine then became the basis for HL2 et al.

Couldn't care less if the single player is pants, if DICE can make a good multiplayer experience out of the game it might be worth a look.
