News New Monkey Island?

Yeah, only the first two were done by Ron Gilbert and only he knows the secret of monkey island. Curse of monkey island was a good attempt to pick up from the bizzare ending of 2, but originally it was supposed to be a lot more weird. Rumours are it was kind of fourth wall breaking, with guybrush as child dreaming it all and coming back as an adult to get back into the monkey island world or something.

As opposed to the (lame) secret revealed in Monkey Island 4, which has the secret unveiled as being a giant monkey robot underneath the island powered by Monkey Kombat. Sounds cool, but is unfortunately ****.

 

One thing though joe...i'd have to disagree with you. the original was the best, with the second only being close behind.

 

The second had more gameplay, and harder puzzles, but the first was funnier. It's too close to call really.

 

Its a matter of opinion really, and I agree its very close, but I prefer the second one on the basis that the art style was more varied, the music more exciting and I love guybrushes new coat.

I seriously hope that they don't f-up this one like MI4 I hated the controls and the 3D looked awful. I suspect they'll use the engine as Sam n Max, which is a shame because I loved the MI3 look and design.

I think the fun part of the game was the click and move, type of interface. Really allows you to discover. I hope that on the new version you won't use the keyboard/mouse to move and discover.

 

It should be a small, digitally released 2D game to test the water IMO, then possibly move to an improved GRIME engine

 

Or it could just use the monkey 2 / 3 engine as it is. Hell it could use monkey 1, and i'd still go out and buy it.

Anyone know where to get hold of 1 & 2? The floppy discs for each one kinda died on me a while back, and i'm needin some monkey loving

 

Monkey Island 1 and 2 both use the same SCUMM engine, same as Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max etc. Monkey Island 3 uses an updated version of it.

As for where to get them, you *can* get them abandonware on some sites, though I really couldn't condone such a thing professionally.

Other than that, they pop up in bargain bins occassionally and are common on ebay for under a fiver. I have both on CD at home, but you can easily put them onto a USB key, so it's probably easiest to ask around your mates and see if they can lend you one.

My brother lent his copy of MI 1 & 2 to a mate a few years ago and hasn't seen it since, grrr (also just started replaying Curse of MI again)

Was that one of the three challenges for the pirates in the Scumm Bar? I can't remember the ingredients though.. I think it had something to do with the kitchen at the back of the bar.

 

It wasn't one of the challenges (Thievery, Bravery and Treasure Huntery) but they do tell you if you ask them.

 

All I can remember off the top of my head is that it contains sulphuric acid, scumm and all sorts of other nastiness. Much like the coctail Eddie Hitler drinks in Hole, ten points from me to anyone who can name its ingredients
