So returned home to Mid-Wales from uni in Lincoln where I had a 60Mb Virgin connection. I now split my time between my parents and my mother-in-law's.

    Connection at my mother-in-laws:

10 times slower than I had, but I was expecting worse.

At my parents: 0.21Mb/s download, 0.37Mb/s upload, 75ms ping. I don't understand why the upload rate is higher than the download, I will have to make sure everything is right their end before phone BT. Either way, it is simply painful. Web pages fail to load at all 50% of the time, with the browser unable to even find a DNS server (tried changing to Google DNS servers with no change), and when they do load they take an eternity. Any kind of streaming is a complete no-go, youtube is 2 seconds of video followed by 5-10min of buffering on the lowest quality. I swear the speedtest results are infinitely better than what it actually is. I'll do a pingtest when I'm next there to check if packets are being dropped left, right, and centre as I suspect.

I don't expect anything decent considering they live out in the sticks on a farm, but when we first got broadband many years ago, it was better than this. I remember figures of roughly 2.5Mb/s at some stage. To be honest, I remember dial-up being better, at least it was stable!

I think I've posted this before. This is our line at the arena for webcasting Giants games. I couldn't get Speedtest.net to complete a full test on it to embed for some reason but this gives you an idea of how good it is - our video editor was uploading highlight footage to the BBC as I was running this test. It is still too expensive for what it is and how much it gets used though.

    [edit]

Printed screen during speedtest - 70.58 is during the upload but it drops to below 50 within a minute and never finishes the test. Any ideas why this might be?

    Uni, no adblocker?

And I never reported back about how nicely my line settled in. The best part is, BT really don't throttle - it's been 6ish months, and I get these speeds on any server that will support them! FTTH cheesecake.

Not on that particular machine, no. That was a fresh install on a workhorse rig which is used to webcast the hockey games using WireCast, so there's no browsing done on it whatsoever.

My new Three mobile broadband on the X230. About three times faster than my o2/Sky home broadband connection! Impressive stuff! As long as the coverage is good, I'll be very happy :)

BT Infinity Option 2. Ping's a little high on Black Fibre's server, but the much lower-latency (15ms) default of Webfusion was for some reason only giving me 12Mb/s downstream...
