Case Mod - In Progress Screamin' Yellow 2/18/08

One old crappy laptop (Dell 266XT) + An awesome paint job (Yellow with black stripes) = Really confused people when they realize how slow it is

The laptop (no I didn't write that, and no, it's not that fast):

After much pain and suffering, the keyboard has been taken off:


After missing two screws and partially fubaring the left side, the top came off:

The next update should be next week because I've got to re-assemble it for my dad so he can use a chip scanner on a car

ALSO, w00t for old laptops for only having two kinds of screws!

Well it's back together now (It's amazing how fast things can go when you know what you're doing) I just gotta wait for my dad to do the scan.

Hopefully next week I can do some sanding/priming.

EDIT: Random bit of info, I got the name from screaming yellow zonkers (I've never eaten them fyi)

yay for modding a dell laptop. i did mine a while ago. im going to re do it blue and white its on the forums some were (black and red laptop mod or something) good luck with yours black and yellow are my fav colors.

And even though there are only 2 kinds of screws, you can almost bet that your local computer hardware store won't have any spares >_<.

But in all seriousness, can't wait to see the final product, looks like it's going to be a really interesting mod!

 

pissed myself laughing! love the colour scheme, but why dose everyone always use an 'old' laptop for mods like these. iv never seen a laptop mod that has a CPU faster than 500mhz!

 

Because laptop cases aren't as easy to come by as desktop cases?

LOL. I got ya! I'm not using fluorescent yellow either, though.

It wouldn't matter what it is, as the paint/primer is sitting on top of whatever you're coating. If you want that mirrored beautiful finish, then buffing is the way to go. Listen to Bill. He knows his stuff!!

 

Because EVERYONE has a Dell Latitude. Hell, I have one too. I bet if you looked in your closet, you'd find one too.

You're going to want the primer so you can smooth out the sandy no-slip surface. If you can get this beast glassy looking, you will be able to paint anything.

 

Well, I got some paint and primer today, sadly evil Home Depot didn't have any high grit sand paper (600 was the highest.)

Will Rust-oleum "stops rust" paint and "professional" primer work for what I'm doing? Or did I get the wrong stuff...

 

Sorry for the bump, but I was hoping for a reply from someone who knows what they're talking about..

My last post was a question, not a statement.

 

Try going to an Ace Hardware if you have one close by, they stock sandpaper up to 1600 grit. Usually the rust-oleum paints and primers are intended to be used with metal parts and I haven't used them on plastic. The worst thing that happens if they don't work well is that you have to sand everything down and re-paint.

 

Try an automotive store. They have sand paper down to 2000 grit...that's where I got mine....you can get your paints there also...including "Adhesion Promotor" for plastics...

 

Rust-oleum works fine on plastics. I painted my dell white, and it looks fine. i did'nt even use primer.
You might want to get some clear coat as well.

Edit: Oh and Krylon Fusion is great, as Scirocco mentions below

 

If you're really picky about it, the Krylon Fusion paints are specifically made for plastic/vinyl dying. Pretty common paint to find at hardware stores. As for the name, I remember Screaming Yellow Zonkers. They had a lot of strangely named snack foods then. Wouldn't be surprised if it was for all the carb-crazed potheads needing their fixes. ;P
