Yeah, I spotted one, you didn't finish assembling it, only kidding, looks fantastic. Well done, excellent job, must have taken ages to draw, very impressive.

Your socket models are awesome though, I started one and promptly gave up.

    Thanks Ron-ski.

To be honest its a very easy case to draw, as there isnt many complicated shapes. It just took so long to measure, especially since the system was running at the time o.0

Measuring can be a pain. That's why I do mine from pictures and guesswork

But measuring is the only way to be sure it's accurate, a digital vernier can be bought for around £20, sometimes less. I used one when I drew my Laing D5 Vario Pump (MCP655) + EK-D5 Top Rev 2.

I started this model with a tape measure and ruler, then got a digital vernier. Ended up remodelling earlier parts more accurately, and in half the time.

Its the best way to measure holes, tubes and thickneses also.

Totally agree. It is very important to make a model as dimensionally accurate as possible. People plan their designs around these components, after all. I resubmitted my most recent contribution because it was 2 mm out.

Hmmm. I take back what I said. The real reason I don't measure things is because I generally don't own the parts. That's the whole idea of the modeling, check to see if it will work before you buy the bits! I do try to use technical drawings when I can find them, and using a good photo you can make educated guesses to the other dimensions.

Fore sure if I had the parts to measure, I would. I do own a nice (non-digital) vernier caliper.

There are always a lot of details in parts which ultimately are only aesthetic and won't affect the placement of the part. If you get the overall dimensions right it won't cause too many problems.

I suppose I should put up a disclaimer: I make no guarantees about the accuracy of my sketchup models.

That's OK; I often have to rely on technical drawings as well. My rule of thumb is that if I do not have access to the part or schematic drawings of it I do not model it because it just ends up being guesswork. Usually it is only the main dimensions that really matter though. Still a disclaimer is good.

I suggest using any sketchup version but saving in SKETCHUP 7.skp to ensure back compatibility.
the saves from 8 and saves from 7 have no diferencies imho.
(e.g the blank backplate i wanted is in 8 :worried:)

Why not just install Sketchup 8?

If you have to use 7 then you can install 8 as well, they will co-exist quite happily as far as I'm aware, then use 8 to save a version 7 file.

Yup ron-ski they work perfectly happily side by side, I'm using SU6,7&8 !

    6 for dfx importing
7 for working in as it's the version that my 3D mouse works with
8 for bullion and saving for archiving
