    USB Notebook light:

    Parts:
Bell wire from from radio shack
Wires from inside Metal Clad wire (black/green/white, I forget the type of MC wire)
USB - salvaged from something else USB
Red 5mm LED (1.7v,800mcd,660nm) from RS
    5mm LED holder from RS
    150ohm Resistor (not pictured)
Black split flex tubing (not pictured)
    Zip ties (not pictured)
    Electric Tape

    Tools:
    Soldering Iron
Knife (wire strippers would work just fine, if not better)

note: The hot glue gun was not used (it doesn't hold crap)

A close-up of the LED, LED holder and USB plug.

Here, I shortened the leads on the LED and the Resistor and soldered them together and to the bell wire. I zip tied the 3 "structure" wires to the LED holder. I then wrapped the bell wire around the structure wires.

Here is the other end of the device. I soldered the bell wire to the black and red wires on the USB plug. The green and white wires got left alone. I put some heat shrink tubing on the connection to clean it up. I then put some zip ties around USB plug and the structure wires to hold them in place.

A picture of the completed device plugged into a notebook...notice how ugly it is.

A picture of the completed light with the Black split loom tubing on it...much more pretty

A dark shot...the digicam not doing the light justice. It'll be just bright enough to see the keys and not bright enough to annoy the guy sleeping next to you on the plane. Also, I picked red because it doesn't affect night vision.

And that's that...let me know what you think, suggestions, flames, whatever.

    --------------------

    USB Plunger:

    Parts:
    Acrylic-handled plunger from Sears Hardware
Salvaged USB plug (later used for notebook light)
bl00 ultrabright LED (works with 5v...)
    Electric Tape
Some wire I found lying about my room
    Tools:
    Soldering Iron
    Knife (once again, wire strippers)

The parts being used... I took some 220 grit sand paper to the acylic handel to "frost" it. Did a crappy job...I wasn't planning on holding on to this beast for long.

The completed USB plunger sitting on my messy desk...this was a very simple project done simply for "kicks and giggles."

    The plunger lighted...oohhhh pretty plunger.

Dark shot...Ultrabright (2000+mcd) LEDs are just that....

USB plunger, for all your nighttime plunging near the computer needs...

    Comments/Suggestions/Flames?

[edit] Crap, pics don't work...I'll work on hosting...[/edit]
    [edit] I'm incompetent...sorry for delay on pics[/edit]

    Indeed; its a *****
    Looks pretty cool though..

Why dont u put a little motor in the bottom part of the plunger, and stick a heavy coin on the motor (unbalanced), then let it spin, it should make it vibrate.

gonna have to agree with the general consensus, it's a *****.

    looks cool tho.

red was a good choice for that laptop light. all the lights i use in here at night are red. it's just alot easier on the eyes. i find it quite relaxing

I got the plunger at Sears Hardware, your guess is as good as mine as to what exactly they intend to sell a mini-plunger for...I bought it to cut it down and make glowing feet for the case I'm working on. I just thought it'd be humorous to make a USB plunger and post some pics of it. Apparently some people in these forums found it a bit more humorous than others...
