This is my '96 Honda Accord, about 2 weeks after I got it. I love it.

I've put different side markers/tail lights on since these photos. So its a tad sexier then this now.






I have a scooter as well, will post up some pictures of it later on.

No idea about the S model. I'm getting the regular Cooper at this point.

I agree we have it easier than elsewhere. However, I do believe in being prudent in some areas and would rather not use a ton of gas for other reasons. Pain at the pump isn't really my overriding motivation.

 

outlawaol, great car, i don't think you'll be disappointed, we havea 99 accord. Great reliability, the interior has held up very well, and compared to my Xterra, that thing goes!

 

Had one of these (Peugeot 407SW) just over a year ago.


But got one of these (Saab 93) now. Much better car!

 

But, Is it going to have room for a car seat? Be needing to take small humans for show and tell, I hear. ROFL!

The Sprite only had a rear shelf, definitely a two-seater. Luckily the Mini has a rear seat. Plus the halves can fold down, so one up for the baby seat and the other folded down for the diaper bag. ;P See, all planned out!

 

Women's ingenuity and foresight has never ceased to amaze me! That's probably why I'm still with Marilyn. Couldn't exist on my own after 30+ years. Women know things!

You can't complain about fuel prices based on the mpg of your car! It's your own fault that you bought a car with high mpg, I'm sure there are more frugal alternatives. I can get 50+ mpg out of my Saab.

 

Fuel prices in the US are just now starting to get near the prices the rest of the world has been paying for years. So, no, $4.25 per US Gallon is not high. (That's $1.12 per liter. 0r 8.75Rd per liter. Prices right now in Johannesburg are over 10Rd per liter. God only knows what prices the UK/EU is being sodomized with.)

Just wait until 2009 when oil hits $200 a barrel. Suddenly that hybrid Honda will look sexier then ever.

Hybrid car that gets >45mpg... $20,000 or more

Do you "well you can't complain because your car gets crappy mileage" people think Americans go to the dealer:
"Hi, can I help you look for a car?"
"Yeah partner, I'm lookin' for at least 500 cubic inches. Bobby Jones next door has a Chevrolet Caprice that gets 14mpg, and I gotta show him that I'm cooler"
"Well, you're in luck! We just got in a new shipment of Cadillac Fleetwoods that have 500 cubic inches and get 10mpg."
"Well, yeeeee hawww! I'll take it!"

The fact is, if you can go out and buy a $30,000 hybrid car, you can afford a lot of gas. The people getting hit are the ones who are on a low budget. A big American RWD V8 car from the 80s is the only thing available in the <$1,000 price range around here. Maybe an 80s Honda or something, but most of them in that price range have 200,000 miles and/or cheap tacky mods that let you know that the previous owner attempted to race it. Without a doubt though, the cheapest to buy and repair is an american RWD V8 car.

For the two years or so I had my oldsmobile, I spent maybe $800 on repairs, and that includes new tires (which are expensive, but only need to be done every few years). When I sold it, the AC belt needed adjusting, but it was otherwise in perfect mechanical condition.
For the same timeframe in my Maxima, I've spent upwards of $4000 on repairs. Right now, the front suspension vibrates, the rear end clanks, and I have a "check engine light".

If you're in high school working part time, you can't really afford anything that is as cheap and reliable as an 80s domestic car. 80s imports will have a lot of problems, because they've been abused... I mean driven by kids for 20 years. 80s domestics have been driven by old people for 20 years, so will have much lower mileage, and be in better condition.

I sold my Oldsmobile for $800. It was in excellent condition. My dad was recently trying to find my brother a $1500 car. he drove a bunch of efficient imports he found after intense Craigslisting, and they were all in terrible condition. Rust, torn seats, bad noises coming from the suspension, 200k or more miles. We go and look at the Oldsmobiles, and they're all in really nice condition.

 

Oh, and if you're above average size (I'm 6'2), you will not fit comfortably in a foreign subcompact. And, if you have friends, and want to be able to go places as a group, having seating for 5+ ADULTS works. Not 2 adults and 2 small children, like in a small foreign car.

Not true with reasonably modern ones tbh. It might be a struggle in ones over about 15 years old, but I can accommodate someone who's 6'7" in my Punto without a worry, front or back.

It can be tricky to fit 5 adults in a "subcompact" as you say, they're not designed for that. They don't do 155mph either, but that's the same thing.
