What the h*ll is going on with Bit-Tech???

I've just been reading the article about Game and its prospects for the future, when all of a sudden my entire screen changes and became distorted, before falling apart and revealing a bloody eBay logo the size of my screen, and then cutting to a full screen video!

'Oh well, I obviously was bored with reading your article and wanted to look at some mindless, poorly directed advertising instead.' (Closes website and visits a competitor instead).

What the hell is this all about? I thought Bit-Tech was changing for the better? Don't tell me that a decision like this was taken with the blessing of the Bit-Tech readership???? There's lots of rhetoric about the new Captains in charge and listening to the input of the readers, and whilst its acknowledged that there will be advertising, we are consistently told this advertsiing is measured and in a non-obtrusive manner. This is all complete nonsense however as the methods of advertising increasingly become more and more intrusive over the past 12 months.

Would someone from Bit-Tech please explain this advertising, please?

Sorry Nexxo, but I have to agree with greypilgers.

Advertising is fine, banners I can deal with without issue, I can even endure the full screen adverts which come up between page clicks you find on other sites. But once a page has loaded and I am half way through an article I don't appreciate an ambush, my entire browser window tearing away to eBay and a video to follow.

This has happened twice and I am almost certain I didn't hover over anything to trigger this, I am not even sure if there was an eBay banner on the pages to begin with.

I am sure the income from such adverts will show very little return once people start getting annoyed and go elsewhere or use ad blockers.

I don't think that is the point, I run Adblock at home but have Bit Tech and other sites whitelisted because I might occasionally be interested in a relevant advert and click it. That is not going to happen if I can't see it.

 

I agree with that, it's just his reaction seems a bit, well, much.

Thats just the thing though guys. I DONT run adblock because it is counterproductive, and I WANT to support Bit-Tech, but Im not upset about this issue in isolation - this is just the latest in a long running, and increasingly more invasive, method of advertising that we are constantly assured by whoever is in charge of Bit-Tech that week, will be measured, applicable, and reasonable when clearly is not. I take it as an insult that the staff of Bit-Tech not only have no control over the form of their website, but also have no idea of what happens on it either. If Bit-Tech don't want us to be able to read their articles through then fine, there are plenty of competitors around we can read from instead.

Not that I expect anything positive to come from my frustration. After all, asking nicely, protesting, or rage has had absolutely no effect on the general move to this by the advertising department so far.

 

Have not seen this offending ad yet, i like the cadburys ad.

I thought that after Simon's response of having already spoken with the advertising department who apparently were already aware of the problems, I would be prepared to give Bit-Tech another chance. I appreciate this is a weekend, but if the issue was already known to Dennis and Bit-Tech during the week, I'm sorry but there is no excuse for something which is so ridiculous.

Honestly, that's it - this site and its owners aren't worthy of the loyalty shown to it by its legions of followers over the years. I have nothing but contempt for the useless and inept ad department and their associates, and nothing but pity for the poor b*stards who write content for this site that is increasingly being sidelined by marketing. You're all basically now temps, lads - It'd be great if there were a way to start up your own unmolested Bit-Tech as a phoenix from the flames and enjoy the support of the people here who appreciate your literary and technological input.

I would actually start a new thread promoting the websites of competitors of Bit-tech ON Bit-Tech's forum, to try and motivate some positive change within Bit-Tech, but I no longer believe it would work. It'd likely just get censored.

Instead I'd encourage everyone to Google for alternatives to Bit-Tech - there are many out there with more sensible and professional advertising campaigns.

Goodbye Bit-Tech. It was fantastic at first, but recently has been poisoned by the action of others.

Yeah I'm seeing the full page ad more than once too.

It's pretty annoying. It also means that I don't venture outside the forums anymore. (So instead of me previously seeing some ads, I know see none - smart move, advertisers )

Here's hoping they don't move the ads into the forums when ad revenues start falling..

OK, how about imagining that you're reading a newspaper or a book - it's a good read and you're really well immersed in it.

Then someone comes up, yanks it off you and screams "EBAY!!" in your face.

Would you now consider punching that so-so in the face "a bit, well much" too?

I've not seen it, but I block ads - no exceptions. Hearing about these sort of antics not only confirms my actions as being "the right thing to do" but also puts the advertiser on my boycott list. Anyone prepared to indulge in such advertising is highly unlikely to be a business I want to be dealing with.

When someone is at the tipping point between acceptance and not, the thing that pushes them over the edge, no matter how small it seems to others, will seem massive to them.

Personally I'm with tristranperry on this matter. Pop-over adverts are the sort of thing I expect from dodgy pornsites and US "news" websites. It makes me think twice about visiting the website again.

Not only is it annoying, it screams "desparation" from a mile away. Not only on the part of the product being advertised but the site desparate for some revenue. Bit-tech isn't going the same way as GAME is it?

 

Now I'm not only getting spammmed by ebay every time I come on here, NO now it's fecking other sh*t that means i have to crash my browser to get rid of it !!!!!

 

I've just had confirmation that this advertising campaign is being stopped, while the technical problems - it repeating so often, basically - are fixed. If you keep getting it reappearing, please let me know.

The ad has been switched back on again, and the problem has apparently been corrected. As always, please tell me if this is not the case for you.
