Hey everyone, I'm getting back into gaming with the release of fallout 4, also looking at witcher 3. What would be the best bang for the buck in terms of graphics cards? I have a budget of under $200. Haven't been doing any gaming as of late besides Fallout 3 and FNV. I have a GTX 460 768mb. Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question. I've just been out of the loop for a few years. Thanks!
I feel I should ask you with that age of card, what sort of overall system do you have? You may be better served saving up and just upgrading the full system if you want to play FO4 and W3 as they were intended to be played. Back to your question though. $200 will get you (from having a quick look at Newegg, assuming you're an American) either an Nvidia GTX960 or a Radeon 285, neither of which I'd say would play either of the games you want at a respectable quality or framerate. I could be entirely wrong as I don't have personal experience with either card, but I'd still recommend saving up and getting a whole new system, dependant upon what else you're running with. If you double your budget, then you're into much more capable cards, and if you triple it, you could probably get a fairly decent full system out of it, reusing parts like your HDD, Case, PSU etc.
Can confirm from personal experience that a GTX 960 can play Witcher 3 at good quality, at least at 1080p. My system has a Haswell i5-4460 @ 3.2GHz/ 8gb RAM @ 1600 MHz + GTX 960 (2 GB version)
Well upgrading my system will be in line in a bit, gotta save for that. I found a deal on a used gtx770 OC 4gb which I will spring for and probably build the new system around.
GTX 960 here - it's really pretty good at 1080p and 2GB cards should be on discount now as EOL. You're not going to turn everything up but you'll see massive, massive gains over your old card. Apparently Radeon R9 390 launching soon to replace that 285 - might be worth it. Hot and quite noisy, but certainly faster for not much more $
Found a used gtx 770 4gb OC on craigslist for $225 It is dope. Definitely breathed some life into my computer. I was worried the rest of my stuff wouldn't be able to handle it.
