    Win XP

To be honest I've got XP Home on one PC and Professional on another and internet connection sharing setup between the 2 with lots of apps and games on both and I've not had one crash or problem due to the operating systems.
I have lots of extra hardware installed too and all without fuss.
I know for some people its a completely different story but so far no probs for me.
I've tried 3.11,95,98,2000,NT4 and XP and XP seems to be the best so far . . . .
    . . . . .Theres time yet !!
    :D

I think this has gone a little off topic... plz refrain from more XP vs 2K vs v1 comments in this thread :)
should you wish to talk about comparisons i'm sure there are other threads in Software&OS forum, or even start your own.... but try to keep this thread on target

    thanks. :)

    Please for give me....

I thought the topic was about winXP service pack.

All I did was mention that Win2k is better because the service packs are already out.

then the topic got onto the fact that windows 1 never had service packs..

I am happy now I have win1 installed and it does seem more stable than WinXP.

    :p

I will have to update to XP, cause VS .NET doesn't run on my Win98SE :(

Win98SE is the best OS I know; very stable and even runs with my 768MB of RAM :dude:

P.S.: I know that 98 can't use that much RAM, but I had to buy it, because it was so cheap :D

    RAM in Win98

It might not use it but other programs running within win98 will do...

You can never have to much RAM :)

i see MS are going to be checking product id's in the windows update site, they will be checking:

    Internet Explorer version number
    Version numbers of other software
Plug and Play ID numbers of hardware devices

in order to see if you have pirate software of not, dont know what they will do if you do have pirate stuff probably wont update windows or something.

    MMmmm

To scan someones hard drive and transmit data back is illegal. Although MS seem to break all the laws anyway.

all MS are going to do is with the XP service pack and any other OS's coming out from now on, is check for a valid validation code. If your code is registered and illegal on there server you cant update.

That is all they are not checking IE or anything else.

Here is some text from this site: http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/windowsxp_sp1_preview.asp

    Changes to Product Activation
Microsoft's controversial Windows Product Activation (WPA) technology is also seeing two minor modifications in XP SP1, neither of which will affect any legitimate users. First, the company discovered that the majority of pirated XP copies out there are tied to single volume license product key. So Microsoft has alerted the company about the problem, changed their key, and disabled it for use after SP1. So anyone using this pirated key will be unable to upgrade to SP1 or any future updates via Windows Update, Sullivan said.

Also, Microsoft is adding a three-day grace period for people that use the same product key to install XP on two different systems; in the past, there was no grace period and the user had to immediately activation via phone in order to use XP on the second system. This will give users some breathing room if disaster strikes and you have to install XP on a new system.

"The impact on valid licenses is zero," Sullivan said.
