It's been chopped in half! This micro ATX Asus Republic of Gamers board is one of the last new P45s we'll see - and built on a smaller footprint this Gene branded little monster could tip the scales in favour of making a cheap, small form factor PC!

 

That's quite an attractive little board, that.

It's even easy on the eyes.

DFI LanParty JR P45 T2RS


It's almost identical in layout, but over a year earlier to market and a good bit cheaper.
I'm running one with a QX9770, and it's a real screamer.

 

I would say the Rampage II Gene review is in progress today, however it's just decided to BIOS corrupt when I tried to overclock. Appears to be dead now...

Isn't the DFI JR P45 T2RS board limited to 8 lanes per PCIx16 slot?.... for starters. I've used one too, overclocked nicely etc, but didn't notice the 8 lanes restriction (even with only 1 video card fitted) until some time later.

 

So in answer to your question, every P45 board has that restriction. But TBH, the bandwidth on PCIe has more then enough headroom to make do with 8 lanes.

 

No the DFI is hard locked to x8 x8 making it cheaper, but other boards give a choice of x16 for a single card, or two x8s.

There's no performance difference though - you'd be very hard pushed to notice.

 

so it blew up after the review? that's not good- maybe like the issue with the old nvidia 680 when if you started her up with the cmos jumper in the clear position- it had a chance to literally catch on fire.. I mean flames shooting out kind of fire down on the bottom end of the board

it happened to a couple of peeps I remember.. they had the exact same fire start buring on the board in the same spot- and their jumpers were both on clear =p 1 is maybe a fluke.. but 2

No the Max II Gene is fine, it's just the Rampage II Gene that has died mid-review. We're waiting on another board to try and do the same...

what would be the best investment in planning a P45 workstation nowadays? Asus P5Q-E since it supports 16GB of memory?
Would it be too hot? support for nvidia cards? waterblock availability?

Anyone good with that? Or would it be better in a lower i7 configuration? Please bear in mind the prices couse that is very important, money is not falling off the trees here

was just wondering if u would get a quick advice that's all, specially after reading the gene review. Perhaps someone out there is up to date with it and could give a smart advice

 

well, you are informing about 4 specific queries, plus a price-conscious comparison with core i7. That's hardly quick advice.

Also, since you don't explain the specific use case and budget, all anyone here could say is: P45 is a decent platform, especially for the price, and virtually any motherboard will do. I really advise you to start a thread with some details though

 

lol, i mentioned that mainly i use it as workstation, at the moment i got a striker 2 extreme which is absolutely annoying with voltages and so on, and i havent got time for that crap, thas why im thinking in moving away to something more stable but as fast and powerfull. Cause mainly i use it for solidworks, sketchup and other editing tools, not gaming at all, but i love to me able to fold nvidia as fast as it can go
