    But can they actually do anything? Surely the UK gov can just be like "well what ya going to do about it?"

    It's pretty much ruled it's ok to mass surveil the population, they just went about it the wrong way.

    The Govt. has always been a bit weird on what rulings it listens to and which it doesn't; historically they seem to obey (with enthusiasm) any ruling which is the detriment of the electorate, while digging its heels in and ignoring rulings that might actually protect "the little guy". I'm thinking of the big police database which contains biometric data on people who were never even charged with - never mind tried for - various crimes. A group went to the ECHR a few years ago, it ruled in their favour and the Govt./Police basically replied, "We have their data and we're keeping it, because actually keeping good records is too hard so we don't know what samples are what."
