    Hi guys

    Is mosfet cooling necessary?

I have an Asus P5K-E/Wifi which has the same layout as other Asus P35 boards, but mine doesn't have any cooling on the topmost mosfets AT ALL. Even the basic p5k-e seems better cooled.

"Hey, good for you, your mosfets don't get hot so they don't need cooling"

Wrong, my mosfets ARE hot but are not taken care of.

Since I do like a bit of overclocking, should I buy some coolers? I was thinking "City of Thermalrights" to match the ultra 120 extreme, but is it really necessary or just overkill?

If you are overclocking i'd recommend cooling but a simple heatsink will suffice nothing fancy is needed.

Generally if MOSFETS on one board are not cooled while others on the same board are cooled, the uncooled ones will be under less strain.

If you're OCing and likely to be increasing voltages, I'd say cool them for sure. :)

thermalright seem to make some good ones

Sorry dont have a good linky one them tho ... I'm thinking of getting one for my board an adding a heatsink from an old board to the southbride (which is naked as the day it was born) for paranoid people

I'm in the process of watercooling my rig and will be adding a block to my mosfets, but then I have seen reports of them running very hot when overclocking, if I was running everything stock I wouldn't bother and just rely on the air movement created by the case fans.

Hey mortadelo, I have a Asus Maximus Formula SE board and from my research the mosfet are about the same size if not exactly the same as the your P5K-E/WIFI-AP. Here is a pic of my board in the prep stage...

As you can see I've added a pair of Thermalright HR-09 S coolers on the mosfets and they fit nicely. The only thing to remember, and this is very important, is make sure (if you order them) you get the "TYPE 2" versions. They have "TYPE 1" and "TYPE 3" aswell but on Thermalright's site the recommend the "HR-09 S TYPE 2" for that board.

Here is a link to verify: http://www.thermalright.com/new_a_page/product_page/chipset/hr05_ifx/05-09-mcl.htm#asusP35

Added cooling for the NB and SB are Thermalright HR-05 paired up with some Evercool Aluminum 70mm x 15mm fans.

    I hope this helps.:thumb:

    ^^ That's serious e-porn you've got there scooby.
I saw the HR-09s at the thermalright site. Seems to be the only air cooling solution.
I'd only have to get one of the since the other is already heatpiped to the NB heatsink.
The modder in me wants me to go for a cheap conversion of a Slot 1 heatsink and walk the thermalright path when I have more cash (HR-07s and HR-05s for a 5 star bling factor).

Thanks guys. You've been really helpful.
