I'm being offered this at £260 from a trusted friend is it still a good deal in light of the GTX 670 launch? Oh and my Coolermaster iGreen 600w PSU has no 8 pin PCI-E plugs on two 6 pins. Will i be ok with adaptors? Its a decent enough PSU but i'm not keen on adaptors.
I personally wouldn't really know, but what I can tell you are the rough prices 580s have been going for in the market place: A reference cooled 1.5Gb 580 is worth ~£220 (which doesn't seem a bad price to me). Obviously the card you are looking at is 3Gb with a better(?) cooler so... extra £40 for those luxuries. *edit* It would probably be better to look at it from the point of view that a 670 is retailing at £320 (£60) more, and the gains are X (I may fill in the math later). Depends really on your budget really and what you do with your computer...
well the games i play are tf2 (plays fine on my backup 3850), deus ex & bf3. the games i will be getting are borderlands 2 and cs:gs other than that its what the future holds or steam does on a really good price.
The only game out of those that is taxing is BF3. All the others run just fine with the 580. I assume your resolution is 1920 x 1080? While that is a good price for a 580, I wouldn't sell it in your case.
i'm buying. i am currently looking for a card after selling my 5870. and yes i am gaming at 1920x1080.
A 580 is still more than enough for 1920x1200 or less, especially a 3GB version. It's another £60 for a 670 and you'll probably see little benefit, but you WILL save a lot of power if you spend an extra £60 on a 670. The 580 is a hungry beastie! If you game a lot you'll get that £60 back off your electricity bill before long. I'd save another £60 and get a 670. Stuff was getting far too power hungry, so it's high time we started seeing performance gains with power savings.
Hard to say which will be more economical in the long run. Depends on how many hours you game and the price of KWh. For example, based on some numbers from guru3d, I estimate you would break even in 2 years if you bought the 670 i.e it would take 2 years for the lower power consumption to offset the higher price of purchase.
I don't game too much. It's sporadic at best. I'd say 5 hours a week tops, but its my only hobby/expense.
Buy it mate i had one and loved it played bf3 smooth as silk on ultra only reason i sold mine was to take advantage of pcie 3.0 still miss it though .
I run a 580 1.5GB with BF3 on auto and it has no problems and looks damned near perfect. No slowdown, even on 64-player spamfests like Metro conquest.
Thanks for all your comments. As I've already pushed the budget up (was thinking £200) I think I may go for it. I don't think I'll be going 120hz anytime soon and its not like borderlands 2 or cs:ga is going to stretch the 580.
