It's one of my personal issues with the former "Western" countries - why the **** do you still call Central Europe as "Eastern Europe". How does countries at dead center, or west to the center count as "Eastern Europe" ? How does Austria belong to "West", but Czech republic with their eastern border being just few tens of kilometers further to east counts as "Eastern Europe. Even more stupid is the situation in case of Slovenia - they are more western than some parts of Austria :).

Actually according to the Finnish girlfriend it's more like 'dickhead' as mulkky means dick. Much of a muchness though.

Before you ask she's never called me that, 'kulta' is the usual - literal translation is gold.

Talking of interesting translations, here in South America we have the Mitsubishi Pajero, a small 4x4, which in Spanish translates to w**ker.

The accepted translation actually refers to horse urine.

Why do Vauxhall/Opel call their small car the Corsa?
Because its predecessor was the Nova, which as any Spanish speaker will tell you, means "Won't go".:thumb:

And then there was Toyota having issues in France with their MR2 so time ago, having to call it the MR instead.

Even if it's a myth, even in italian you could use non va even though it's not technically correct it's still used. Just because it doesn't make sense/isn't used in english once directly translated, it doesn't mean it's not fine in the original language.

Well there's always the Fiat Pinto (small willy).

Never heard this, where did you hear that? But then my Portuguese is a lot better than my Spanish. In my experience the word is rarely if ever used at all so hearing it in context is difficult. .

I only ask as languages is kinda my thing (I speak English, Portuguese and German and I have a decent understanding of Spanish and Italian and I am trying to learn Russian atm) and I am really into things like etymology.

Fiat Croma. In The Netherlands, Croma was a very well known baking butter at the time.

Maybe apocryphal - but apparently the Mitsubishi Starion - http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsubishi_Starion - was supposed to be the Stallion, but the Japanese engineering team miscommunicated it to the marketing team.
