The 'Rift 2 cancelled' rumour can be laughed out of the building just on basic logic. Sure, Facebook would spend hundreds of millions building and staffing the largest VR R&D lab on the planet, putting out numerous technical papers, attending conferences (always interesting stuff at Siggraph), and spending several hours at their own not-even-a-month-ago conference talking about PC VR and showing off their latest development, only to go "nah, lets not use any of that" without a single one of the hundreds of scientists and engineers employed there mentioning 'we're all getting fired' in the sudden diaspora to competitors. The techniques they've demonstrated (foveated rendering with ML periphery fill, real time software and hardware refocussing at high fields of view, Focal Surface Displays, etc) are barely even possible with current multi-hundred-watt desktop rigs, let alone any hardware in the next decade able to fit into a sub-10W mobile SoC (even assuming an impossible continuation of Moore's law scaling). Their most advanced mobile VR device (Quest) is a polished version of a device whose full capabilities were demonstrated in 2016.
