LN23 00.update : Intro 01.update : Vumeter 02.update : External power part 03.update : Fanbus 04.update : Iron painting 05.update : Dvd faceplate 06.update : Ps2 plugs 07.update : Dvd support 08.update : Dvd part 1 09.update : Dvd part 2 10.update : Top part 1 Burning Chrome I've seen cubic pc, pyramidal, spheric but not a lot of cylindric pc ! So here the one that will become my future TV/divx/mp3 station : It's a linen basket Lot of holes for airflow, plenty of space to include basic components of a pc During misc research, I found few computer concept art with cylindric case on applecollection website (this for example) stuff that I planned to put together: - µATX mobo with P3 1Ghz (integrated sound), 128MB PC133 - Geforce 2 Mx200 (with tv-out) - tv card wintvgo - hdd 120Go seagate (1 to start, 1 or 2 more when money will rain) - 1 hdd rack - 3 or 4 PAPST 120mm fans - 145W PSU that was with the p3 mobo i got - a DVD player, maybe slot-in - Ati Remote Wonder / or usb IR receiver + basic remote control - IR keyboard - 1 or 2 liquid effect neon and for software: - Aurox Linux - MythTV (here is the real challenge!)
project: Burning Chrome let's start dremel ! I cut the original µatx case to take the two 5'1/4 slots (1 for hdd rack, 1 for dvd) I want to put the two 5'1/4 slots at the bottom of the BC case plastic borders (originally for car windows) for safety the hole is larger than the effective size of 5'1/4 because I will hide this with a cover quick try chromed cover chromed cover with plastic border, but the result is not as good as I'd intended.. I'm searching for an alternative solution for covering dvd drive, maybe some wood ? didn't choose yet what is the more practical, dvd on top or rack on top temporary system to attach the mobo tray
I have seen a few of the cylinder pcs onthe forum... looking good. I like the choice of cdroms... kkings of looks like a round g5... good work
I always love to see cases in new and unique shapes. Something other than 6 flat sides is as refreshing as it not being beige. I really like the look of the chrome with the holes. I don't know what exactly you have planned, but it might look pretty cool as a pc/decorative lamp, with a couple of cold cathodes stuck in there. What ever you do, it's definitely off to a great start.
nice looking... looks like it will turn out to be a bit of work... i hate working with round stuff in conjunction to computers hope it works out for ya, Happy Modding!
As it will stay next to the tv, I don't want a lot of leds (or maybe with low intensity) but I planned to put a liquid effect neon inside the case that I will power on to use like my lava lamp, so effectively it can be considered as a pc/decorative lamp
I do not remeber the exact names but there has been a few on the forums in the last month... go through the old posts and see.
Little Update PSU with a papst 120mm (there will be an airduct and a second fan 120mm) little test with mobo psu emplacement, not a lot of space between psu and hdd rack fitting-test with video and tv card, I dunno if I will add fixations two 3'1/2 for hdds, didn't defined where it gonna end up two vandals buttons, one with a protection (looking at my local electronic shop, I found the same protection as in ZapWizard Ammo pc mod, so I HAD to buy it ) + ampermeter to display the state (on/off) of the pc displaying amper and power used i'm thinking about the visual aspect, i found different solutions : - keep the chrome and doing covers with chromed objects - keep the chrome and doing covers with wood (like old cars: wood and chrome) - keep chrome and adding stylistic flames in color or rust - paint everything in one color - add a special effect (piloux's blackmesa mod is hypnotic) : rust, old bronze i've been searching about this last option : paint test : on the right, green old bronze, on the left, black paint + green old bronze i've bought some bronze paint so i will do same kind of test tomorrow this is the end : cold cathode will be green for a "tommyknockers powered" effect
I would leave it as a chromed thingy 'cause it would suit better with the other apparatus that will be standing next to it... that's what I think at least... anyways I'm looking forward to this thread!
Nice work! and an absolutely fantastic idea... Terrific! I've done some work with a round and assymetrical case myself.. (helmet) and I found my saviour to be plumber's epoxy, you can shape it safely with your fingers, it's like plasticene, but it dries and is as hard as steel. (the epoxy is in fact 90% steel) I don't know if you'll need it.. but it can be much easier to attach things with your fingers than finagling a bracket into place on a rounded object. Awesome idea!
