At this time there are over 100 regional dialects spoken in England, out of those around 40 or so are major dialects.

Added: accents and dialects are not the same thing. An accent can always be readily understood, this is not so with a dialect.

The new Apple retina display is handled very oddly in OSX. Because of resolution scaling the GPU has to render at 2x the stated resolution. So what do you get?

Well in 1440x900 mode you get the exact 2880x1800 of the panel. And the GPU renders all of it. What's interesting is if you use 1680x1080(?) or 1920x1200 mode, the GPU literally renders at 2x the resolution and shrinks it down.

So if anyone at BT uses the new rMBP, just remember that Apple went beyond the norm for implementing the ultra high res display just so it's usable. It's quite admirable really. Yes I sound like an add, but the fact that they went above and beyond and forced the GPU to render 2x the pixels just to display it (and then scale it down) is pretty damn impressive.

Apparently live oak lasts forever in the elements, as I'm taking down a shed to reuse the wood in our house and it's indestructible. After over 50 years it's still hard to drive nails in.

Lobsters also come in varations of Blue and Yellow. They're rare, but it's possible.

Also Lobsters (and most crustaceans it seems) can potentially live forever.

Londoners are not allowed to keep a pigsty in the front of their homes.

It is illegal for a Member of Parliament to enter the House of Commons wearing a full suit of armour

The carat in gold (karat in the US to avoid confusion...) and the carat in diamond are basically the same thing not just in name but in reality. Both are based of the mass of a carob seed, roughly 0.2g with incredible consistency from seed to seed.

Today's carat weight has been normalised as 0.2g, but what has the mass of a seed got to do with the purity of gold? Well there is a Roman coin called the solidus which was pure gold, and has a mass of (yes, you've guessed it) ≈ 4.8g, or 24 carats. So pure gold is 24 parts Au, and 0 parts anything else. Today a gold purity is most often not only quoted in carats but also fineness which is quoted in parts per thousand.

I have no proof, but I'd probably have to argue this one, I don't know if I'd count the English Channel, Bristol Channel as seas, and what about the west coast of Scotland, does that not meet the Atlantic Ocean?

Someone put me right without burning me please.

In relation to Teelzebub's fact about stamps:
Great Britain was the first country to issue postage stamps in 1840

    Other random facts:
Dandelion root can be roasted and ground as a coffee substitute.

Mel Blanc (the voice of Bugs Bunny) was allergic to carrots.

One pound of maple syrup can make eight pounds of candy or sugar.

An elephant is the only land mammal that cannot jump.

I'd think that actually breaks quite a few laws of the universe right there ;)
It's actually one gallon of maple syrup to produce eight pounds of sugar (source)
