DRM free is definitly the way to go. I used to buy music & games on my old 3 phone (well I say buy, the contract had £5 of downloads every month so it was a case of use it or lose it) but when it died it meant I lost the music/games too.

DRM or no DRM my music always ends up with no DRM after I get to it. But I like to seem them stop.

"albeit in the proprietary MP3 file format "

Can a format that is readable by almost any music player, car stareo, CD player, cell phone and computer really be called proprietary?

It certainly can - you have to pay licensing fees to use it.
