I would probably not play games but trying at least to share the bed with all models of Elite, steal a extreme sportscar from a showroom, rob a bank or do some other extreme stuff I normally wont think to do in a lifetime


The problem starts when on the last day of my life, the doctors say that they may have made a mistake...


Anyway...

I will add Pacman and Galaga to the list.

 

Wow, that brings back some memories. I was only the other day trying to get Serious Sam working properly for coop with my other half. It's so much cheesy fun! I agree about Rome:TW, some how it feels more fun to play than the later games (I have barely touched Empire and went back to Medieval 2 just after getting it!). Ditto with Vice City - San Andreas was too much like The Sims!

Some other games I remember enjoying: Vietcong, NOLF (both very fun single player), MOHAA, Battlefield 1942 (with a massive amount of mods and perhaps bf2 - both good fun multiplayer). What about FEAR - for finally giving you LEGS in an FPS!

Perhaps it would be nice to see a round-up of good multiplayer games and their mods? I haven't really played much "current" stuff (still bf2 and il2 at the mo!).

 

NOLF was a hard game to cull from the list

Don't want to nit pick, but I don't think thats a real screenshot of Freespace 2. I have the game and that is not any class of ship I have ever seen Terran, Vasudan or Shivan. The texture models seem very complex for a 1999 game also the high resolution and is that also dynamic lighting? Maybe its one of of the Open Source Mods that has been released for Freespace 2.

In any case, a "scratch-your-balls" kinda satisfying game to play, truly brilliant.

 

C&C is such a crap. You forgot Total Annihilation or Supreme Commander. Or were these to complex for you?

Grim Fandango - almost feel like acquiring it to play again!

 

Didn't read the article thoroughly but wheres the classics like Monkey Island, DotT and Full Throttle </broken record> ?

 

Read the Grim Fandango section - it pained me very much to trim out Monkey Island and DotT, but we felt there was really only room for one Lucasarts adventure game, otherwise we would have to include them all. Grim Fandango seemed to be best, most polished, innovative and accessible of them all. We also wanted to contrast it as a 3D adventure game with a classic Sierra game to show how the genre had grown.

It is indeed from one of the Open Source Mods - well spotted!

 

Since Diablo II is on there, I'll mention 'nethack' - not a PC game per se, but the inspiration for Diablo and its ilk.
Yes, it's not 'real time' and yes, the ASCII graphics are cheesier than a cheesy thing (unless you download a suitable tileset) but it's fearsomely addictive and surprisingly difficult.

Nice to see Civ 4 getting a mention too

Of the list, my favorite has to be Vampire: Bloodlines. As you wrote, once fully patched, it's an RPG masterpiece, a game that's intelligent, humorous (just try playing as a malkavian), but also violent, gory and with a second to none collection of NPCs. Anyone who thinks Fallout 3 is immersive just because of the endless ruins, subway tunnels and caves, absolutely must interact with these characters and see how it's possible to lose yourself in a world where there is meaning to your actions and consequences as well, where the sandbox isn't so much defined and restrained by the virtual size of the world but by what you actually do there.

If you haven't already, buy it and play it. It's worth every penny/cent.

 

What about GTA IV ? One of best games I ever played in my life ...

 

I did mull over Nethack, which I'd mentioned in a previous feature (The Best Games You've Never Played), but I decided in the end that between Diablo 2 and Dwarf Fortress that genre had been covered.

Also if you don't fancy Grand Prix Legends, pick up GT Legends or even GT Evolution and slap the GTL mod on.

 

What about little big adventure?

 

Come on, Star Craft was way more important than Red Alert 2.
And for that matter, way more enjoyable, longer lasting and diverse!
(And LBA and Homeworld are missing)

 

Hmmm, missing the "Flightsim" and "Mech" genres that were big in the nineties, but otherwise great list!
