You only really need 4gb of RAM unless your doing editing work so can save a little there.
Get a AMD 955 and save a little then overclock it yourself. Most people here call that fun.
Get a 7200rpm drive such as the samung spinpoint F3

The case + PSU option will be cheaper than going the separate route which would be around £70-80. However build quality is likely to be lower.

You can do so much better for £600, 16GB RAM is obviously trying to deflect from the underwhelming other components.

He's already been persuaded to self build. Read the thread before posting?

Thanks for your advice mucgoo. Keep up the good work.

For the op, i put this together from scan:

    1TB Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 Harddrive

380W Antec EA 380D EarthWatts Green PSU

Antec 100 One Hundred, Black Midi Tower Gaming Case

Intel Core i5 2500K Unlocked, 1155, Sandy Bridge CPU

    8GB (2x4GB) Corsair Vengeance DDR3 PC3-12800 (1600) RAM

    Sony AD-5260S-0B 24x DVD±R DVD

    Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3/B3 Motherboard

1GB MSI GTS 450 GFX Card

    Total £587.68 including shipping

admittedly without a copy of windows 7 included but still a really good set up for the money imo

    So if I went for:

    Corsair XMS3 8 GB : 4 x 2 GB Memory - DIMM 240-pin - 1600 MHz ( PC3-12800 ) - £58
    ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 - motherboard - ATX - AMD 890GX - Socket AM3 - £90
    AMD Phenom II X4 955 - 3.2 Ghz AM3 Black Edition CPU - £82
Coolermaster Elite 330 Case With Coolermaster eXtreme Power 500W PSU - £50
    Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB - £36
    Gigabyte R685D5-1GD HD 6850 1GB Ati AMD Radeon Graphics Card - £142
    Sony DRU-880S, Black, 24x DVD±R, 12x DVD±DL, DVD+RW x8/-RW x6, RAM x12, SATA,Retail Labelflash - £20
    Windows 7 - £65

    Total - £543

Would that be a decent rig? Considering my budget is £600 would you upgrade anything?

    Thanks

aidacuk, you can afford a sandybridge core i5 2500k setup for your budget which is much much faster and future proof than your amd suggestion

Well, it would be sensible to spend more on the cpu and mobo considering the performance gain compared to the increased performance you would get from the HD 6850 as you can always upgrade the graphics card in the future. Upgrading your cpu normally means mobo and sometimes ram too.

My suggestion includes a good but low watt psu so upgrading might be an issue. If you could afford £50 - £100 more overall, you will get a really decent rig

In other words, on your budget, I would spend less on the GFX card and more on getting a sandybridge core i5 and p67 motherboard

You won'go wrong with the specs of the enthusiast overclocker in the CPC harware buyers guide clicky and would blow the socks of what you listed in your opening post.

A fine build tho I have had no experience with that case/psu and I would swap the HD for a Samsung F3.

You don't want to overclock your cpu then? Otherwise a k series core i5 is the way to go. I would spend less on the gpu, maybe a 450 gts or 550 to help pay for the cpu upgrade

This is my first attempt at a build so I think I'll leave the overclocking for now :D Thanks for your help :thumb:

Edit: Oh yeah, I meant to swap the HD to the F3.

Might be more expensive, but its worth considering 2x4GB rather than 4x2GB. That way if you want to upgrade, you can get two more 4GB sticks without having to change a thing.

I would suggest the motherboard is a little pricey given the CPU you are buying. Note that P67 isnt the 'extreme/high end' chipset. Bandwidth is limited, you wont be able to run 2 graphics cards at x16 unless you buy a board with additional pcie lanes (like the msi big bang, but thats even sillier).

There are lots of nice features on the asus p8p67 pro, but ultimately the p67 platform is a little crippled if you want to use it fully. If you want an expensive full featured mobo you are better off on lga1366 or waiting for lga2011. If you want a sandybridge build, are buying a locked CPU that you cant overclock, just go for H67 and save yourself £40-50.

Otherwise, its not a bad rig.
