Hi guys, just want to get a rough idea at a gaming build for a mate. This will be his first ever gaming rig and he would like to play games at 1080p. He will overclock the CPU in the future as well as the video card. I will be coming up with a build later on (Its pretty early in the morning lol). Any ideas from now would be ideal tho. He said he has no care for a SSD if its going to cut into the budget. Doesn't need a monitor or speakers etc.

    So far I'm looking at

    i5 3570k
    8gb ram
EVGA GeForce GTX 660 Ti Cheesecake+

    Cheers.

You could use this thread as a starting point. If you drop the monitor and SSD, the price should fit just inside the budget. http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=257979

However, an SSD is a massive performance boost, so it might be worth it to squeeze in one somewhere.

I'll do that. Regarding the SSD, I've never used one. I take it a small one just for the OS would be suitable. Is the difference light & day? over a normal HD?

SSD is silent, much quicker, less hungry on electricity.

Small SSD will do but I will recommend to get a drive with 120GB.

He doesn't care about noise but I guess less electricity is a good point.

Used this as a base but as you can tell, its a good £150 over budget and thats not including the SSD

Grab this motherboard: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/giga...ii-6gb-s-sata-raid-pcie-30-d-sub-dvi-d-hdmi-a (saves £70)

And this RAM: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/8gb-...pc3-12800-(1600)-non-ecc-cas-9-9-9-24-xmp-15v (1.5V instead of 1.65V)

An SSD is a large performance boost. Boot times are improved and the whole system feels a lot "snappier" overall. I'd say it's a night-and-day difference. I guess you could buy an SSD later on too.

If you need to go cheaper, I'm afraid you'll have to cut down on the graphics card or processor.

This is not a bad option, and would save another £80: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-...z-gddr5-gpu-1000mhz-1280-cores-dp-2x-dvi-hdmi

Comparison between the 660Ti and the 7870: http://anandtech.com/bench/Product/647?vs=548

Have you considered the operating system by the way?

You could get a cheaper case to save some pennies. The Haf922 is somewhat dated now. You can get something like a Corsair 200r for £50, or a fractal core 3000 for the same sort of money. If you're really set on the half's colour scheme, you could look at the coolermaster k 380 @£40. All these cases have usb3 which the Haf922 is missing.

Thanks guys. Your advice got it down to £794. Do you think its worth my mate saving an extra £50-60 for the 660 ti? How well does the 7870 overclock
