I'm not saying there aren't any, but that they make up a tiny minority of the player base. I bet if we trawl every review on metacritic 99% of the reviewers will be male, which is undoubtedly a fairly accurate representation of the player base.

RPS very noble stance of addressing gender issues in the gaming industry is great and all that, but I personally wouldn't mark Rockstar down for it in a controversy courting game like GTA, which caricatures people from all walks of life for the sake of humour and a great story.

Think about the impact Rockstar North have on young people, thats reason 1.
If I had that much power I would try and promote gender equality by including playable female characters with the same depth as the others. Even if technically I would be catering to a tiny portion of the playerbase, I think it would plant the seed in peoples mind that games are for everyone. I would see it more of a thought experiment as well for the writers / designers to make a female character that has a good story that truly comes from a female perspective. Of course you would have to hire women to get that right so there is reason number 2.

    Oh dear [IMG]

The reviewer would clearly prefer to live in an imagined world where all bank robbers, drug dealers and repo men are eloquent, articulate and sophisticated. Croquet on the Lower Lawn, anyone?

It was 'writing' like that that made GTA IV feel like the most grounded game I've ever played and Niko Bellic one of my favourite game characters. I loved the dialogue in GTA IV. And as soon as GTA V is released on the pc and reduced to £5 on Steam I'm buying it, you ****wit!

I think the issue is that GTA (to the best of my knowledge) has never had a great female character that stands out, apart from generic prostitute/pornstar/**** girlfriends....

Aye man, plus little things like if you buy your ammo en-mass from a particular seller there shares perform better.

Yeah, can agree with that. Does it have to though, and if so, why? There is a decent mix of secondary female characters, I remember Auntie Poulet from GTA Vice City as being a pretty badass crimelord. Also, the girlfriend in GTA4 definitely didn't fall into any of the above categories, she was a decent, upstanding girl!

I was pleased to see that CIG have made their female characters as awesome as their male counterparts:

"For our first female character we didn’t want a cheap pinup; we wanted a badass space explorer who can hold her own on the fringes of civilization!"

Catalina from GTA3 was a standout female character for me, she wasn't a stereotypical depiction of a female character by any means.

That's true! She was a seriously bad-ass character. As was that Japanese dominatrix, Asuka.

You can get the game for £39.97 at Asda at the moment... in case anyone was looking for a slightly cheaper deal.
I'm going to resist for now as I have very little free time.

:duh: Zero at the moment as there is no PC version.
I'd imagine there's a fair few pirated copies of the console versions already though.

I've never understood this gripe people have with the car controls in GTA 4 (or the GTA4 runs like **** complaint either). I really liked the handling to me the cars felt well balanced and predictable. Driving felt far better in GTA 4 than a lot of recent arcade racers.

    £38 in Tesco.

I'm reminded how in Saints Row a male or female lead character are entirely interchangeable. OK I understand tight control of the writing and character are vital to Rockstar's vision for the game but after so many titles and with the budget they have, it's surely not beyond the will of *ahem* man to include a strong female lead? Can women not be ****ed up, psychotic arseholes too?

I also agree with the previous poster that they have a duty of care now with the success. More than any of its' peers, kids play this title en masse. I'm not going into details as we all know why kids shouldn't play this game and the reasons parents let them, but after having had a conversation with my 13 year old nephew yesterday whose reasoning was that everybody in the playground already knows about the content I grow more and more concerned as I get older. Kids understand only within their limited ability to comprehend what's being shown to them: half understood without the benefit of time, experience and a proper frame of reference. I'm not for one minute advocating changing the fundamental nature of the game but they could damn well tackle the misogyny in my opinion.

After reading this final line in the review "Then it goes and robs a bank just because it can, and despite yourself you kind of fall in love with it again."

I may have to buy it now!!

(I wasn't bothered until I skimmed all the way through the review and hit that line!)

strange how the steering on most consoleports feels weird, even as consoles have thunbsticks these days. GTAIII and san andreas steered best using short taps, as with a digital controller.
Flight required a sensitive mouse, or better a stick though.
What I don't understand is that none of them really drive well with a wheel, especially since there are quite a lot of console wheels out there.

For the gender question, i prefer to play a female character. For all the wrong reasons though. If I spen hours staring at a persons behind in 3d person view, it may as well be pleasing.
Don't think it'd work for GTA though, I'd be an absolute ****.

That said, maybe christmas 2014 in a steam sale is my chance.
Why pirate something when you can buy it for a tenner?
