    I worked for Atmel for any years in UK, till they closed down the site and moved all engineering/manufacturing to Philippines.

    I highly doubt that. AVR is probably one of the major reasons for acquiring Atmel. As far as I'm concerned, Atmel doesn't have any factories that are really worth noting (unlike companies like TSMC) so the main interest in Atmel is probably their patents, designs, and engineers.

    One can only hope that this would lead to better microchip dev tools/free compiler. But realistically the opposite is more likely (total annihilation of atmel tools :()

    I first read this as "Microsoft buys Actimel for $3.56 billion". I think I need more sleep.
