Although I understand, it is still a pity all that work is now unavailable. I hope those that produced content have been able to keep what they created at least.

This is really an argument from lazyness: protecting a trademark requires that it be actively defended, but that does NOT require sending takedowns. Simply issuing a statement along the lines of "Nintendo are granting limited right to use the 'Metroid' trademark to A2MR for the purpose of naming the game, under the condition that it is not used for profit". Responding to an unauthorised use of a trademark can include authorising a limited use of that trademark and still fulfil the defence criteria of maintaining a trademark.

Regardless, the DMCA is completely the wrong instrument to use to do so. It is a tool for use against copyright violations, and A2MR did not contain a copy of any original Metroid games.

For those who remember the recent copyright troll using Nintendo's name without their authorisation: this isn't the case here, the DMCA notice appears to be legitimate.

And this is why fan made projects should be open source and redistributable. All their work just went down the drain.

I don't get what fans are thinking when they do this kind of work and expect it to stay up.

It is still available as a torrent on the Pirate Bay. Use a VPN or use Proxy Bay to find a mirror if it is blocked in your region.

    Long live the fighters.

No more bugfixing or cross-platform support though.
