To support a billion people at once. http://www.bit-tech.net/news/gaming/2014/05/06/oculus-planning-vr-mmo/1
So basically Facebook in VR. Complete with adverts. Also sounds like somebody was reading Ready Player One and got a bit excited. Sadly this is exactly what I expected from the Facebook buyout. This isn't a game guys, it's social media in VR.
Would it truly be a game ? My thinking is that it would be more of a social virtual world, complete with the ability to meet up and chat with friends, hold meetings, consultations, go shopping and test virtual products before you buy, go to virtual theme parks with friends, virtual paint ball games, a whole virtual world without the need to spend hours traveling.
So I just need to find a job where I can work from home and I would never have to leave the house. Fantastic.
Some of you are so cynical that it makes me very sad indeed. Don’t you find the idea of something like the Metaverse an extremely intriguing idea? All those (now sadly clichéd) early cyberpunk/sci-fi ideas made real? Are you so cynical that all sense of wonder has been completely drained from every fibre of your being? I suspect that the majority opposed to this idea will oppose it simply as a means to bash Facebook. Leaving aside the questionable data collection policies of Facebook (and any bit-tech reader should be quite capable of reducing their exposure to this without cutting off their nose to spite their face), I’m quite interested to see where Oculus takes this concept and whether they’ll actually bring it to life. Let’s face it there are few companies in the world that would be able to support the infrastructure that this would need, and the first two that spring to mind are Facebook and Google.

I love how the fact that facebook is involved turns decades of VR dreams and promises into the worst thing ever. Now where's the force feedback and motion-trace suits? That's all that's missing here, and I will TOTALLY buy a Rift that requires me to wear an electronic wetsuit to play this game. I will buy it RIGHT NOW. Bonus points if the suit has electroluminescent inlays so I look like I just walked off the set of Tron:Legacy. ... Look, I'm sorry. But regardless of anything else going on there, the movie LOOKED damn cool.
