Scratch Build – In Progress Project Sumerian Cry (26/04/2013) UPDATE

This project is in part inspired by one of my deep passions and interests, that is ancient sumerian language, history and culture.Twenty years ago I was fortunate enough to learn Sumerian Cuneiform and this project log was born from this.

The whole build is that I am looking for something different, a little more mature than the usual game-or warefare build

Next I am not happy with the standard side panels from mountain mods, so I thought I would so my own. Given the measurements of the previous stock panels, I decided to do my own!

Now I am aiming for a more mature mod, then the usual game themed case this time and Since my interest is ancient sumerian cuneiform I based the panels upon this idea.

I am using Acrylic at 5mm thick and the colour of 901 neutral grey. The main panel will have my online handle 'gilgamesh' the second will have my sponsor of specialtech whom sponsored the water block and gave me a discount on the fans and fittings.




The Cuneiform translates as 'Gilgamesh Passion for high end water cooling'
Bare in mind this is the first proven written language

Also to further promote quality I have NOT opted for cheap laser etching or for even cheaper vynil but rather for a FULL CNC engraving onto the acrylic

The above shows my design for the side panels.

In addition I was not happy with the standard FLAME POLISH on the edges
Instead I used a diamond sanding machine (shown later) to polish the edges until it looks like glass.

Next I didnt like the standard panels from Mountain mods as they are pretty rubbish to be honest in my opinion. So I thought it would be best if I made my own.

One panel (the main one has my online handle) the other has the SPECIALTECH logo

Next up the Cuneiform Side panel section

Remember this stands for 'Gilgamesh Passion for High-End Water Cooling'

TO transliterate the cuneiform into phonetical sounds it would be as follows:

arhuš a-nir an-zag ba šà-šed

(the latter word literally means to 'COOL DOWN ' rather than cooling)



















Please bare in mind that the engraving goes 1mm into the acrylic itself.

The cuneiform panel was on the CNC machine for 90 mins alone= total cost of these two panels= £150 including two PSU hole covers (shown later)

ACRYLIC FEET Manufacture

As standard on Mountain Mods cases they come equipped with castor wheels. Personally I am a little fed up with this as after all it is a computer case NOT a luggage trolley! However I thought of doing my own acrylic feet.

Now acrylic feet are nothing by the way of unusual, however when I saw the standard acrylic ones used by certain manufacturers, I simply decided that they were not up to my high standards so I thought that I would do my own.

So in this mm build USE our own customised feet as I said it reflects the quality
Note these feet are able to have LED'S installed and will be used on this MM build so the case looks like its floating.

Anyway enough of the hot air!
I went to my favourite Acrylic company:

The acrylic then is taken to have FIVE holes drilled though, FOUR for the m4 mounting screws the fifth hole in the centre 5mm being the one that houses the LED!

SPECIAL NOTE

Most Acrylic is only FLAME polished, IE Cut with a laser and then a flame ran over to smooth and melt some of the sharp edges. THIS is your everyday RUN of the MILL CASE MOD!

NOT SO HERE
These acrylic feet need to reflect that of this build. So before the flame polish we put them in a DIAMOND SANDER!

This machine uses a naturally occurring diamond to REALLY POLISH that acrylic!





SO first up HERE IS your EVERYDAY acrylic feet that you get from a certain USA case manufacturer!

Yes it looks nice but LOOK at the ridges?



Now look at my THICKER,TOUGHER and higher quality acrylic with its Diamond sanding.
(these will be used in this build)



The Slight blemish is only dust particles as it has been in my room for a while
Next we have them side by side



I know which one Id RATHER USE!

Note my acrylic feet in the photo show only four holes not five due to it being a prototype 1 foot !

PT 2 is exactly the same in quality just has an extra hole in the centre which travels half-way through the foot for the LED

First up a BIG THANK YOU to Aqua plastics on this one.
I gave them ONE HOURS notice to get these done and dispite being busy with other work they came through.

At the end they said they were NOT happy with the final product as it was rushed and the finish is not as good as PT one as they didnt have the time to do it!

As you can agree their RUSH JOB is better than most peoples hard work!

Update Prepping the radiators

There is nothing much I can really do until the case comes back from the powder coaters.

SO let us prep those radiators for the new build.

When either using new radiator's allways FLUSH out the FLUX residue before use.

In my case these radiators were used befor4e, so we need to flush out the old coolant.

A few years back people would have employed white wine vinegar to do a thorough flushout. However even after rinsing people would end up with tube dis-colouration, slight foaming in the fliud etc. To get behind this vinegar is an acidic solution used to strip a very fine layer of impurities from inside your radiator. However the vinegar MUST BE NEUTRALISED into a balanced PH, one can do this by using a Bi-carbonate of soda (baking powder) in a hot solution. Case in point pour this over vinegar and the resultant bubbles is carbondioxide-the waste product of the neutralisation.

After this process repeated flushing is used.

All this is not needed these days... Simply repeated flushing with HOT TOP water can be used. SO long as the FINAL RINSE is with dionised or Distilled water!

Finally a few comments about those bit-fenix cables

Now that I have held one in my hand and if it means anything to you, i can assure you that these products are of the HIGHEST quality. Indeed as Adrian said, the weave on the braiding is very dense!

I have heard reports that some people say they can see the heatshrink used on the cables....

Judging by the photos below we can assign that claim to the dust bin.

i dont use them to be honest im not much of a gamer.

THe idea is that you use one for your internet connection and the other for connecting to a LAN so your ping doesnt increase as a result.

MAJOR POINT YOU NEED TO CONSIDER WHEN USING THESE FANS:

Normally when using g open-cornered fans in radiator cooling , you simply use a FAN-RAD screw I.e. one side of the fan screws into the rad and the other side of the fan you have a screw/bolt that goes through fan-grill case and into fan. Easy and simple.

Though these fans ARE open cornered allowing you do that, I don't think that system will work at all with this fan. This is due to the rubberised material of the fan housing, Normally for example with MM cases you use a 5mm Self -tapping screw which goes straight through grill case and fan but the 5mm self tapping screw will NOT BITE into the fan housing. So to all intents and purposes Treat THIS FAN AS CLOSED CORNERED AND USE ONE LONG BOLT to go through fan grill case-fan-and then into the radiator!

 

hey mate, glad to see you finally got to post here, looking good so far, my only suggestion would be, buy a chepo 210-220 geforce for physics and use the 285 on the second mobo, seems lique quite a waste using it just for physics

 

normally i would agree, but i dont want anything aircooled if i can help it.

Not sure if there is a water block out for that.

THe idea of this build is to be as extreme as I can possibly afford buddy.
