    Hello all, :thumb:

Over the past year or two I have been building custom pc's such as the 2 below; and I thought I could extend this by going in to modding. I consider myself a novice and have only done smallish mods in the past.

One of my first plans is to mod an old compaq case into a Gothic, Steam Punk like design but a little more chic.

First off I did a few VERY rough sketches of some ideas in my head such as a gothic window in the side panel.

    [IMG][/IMG]

I also plan to build and paint some Warhammer 40k buildings and use them for detail in certain areas such as the front panel. But first I had to fully take apart the whole case.

Time to DRILL OUT RIVETS :thumb: :D !!!!!

Here is the case ol'beaut in her original state

    [IMG][/IMG]

So after some serious drilling of rivets.......

So the next job now the case is in pieces is to sand down all the surfaces ready to spray them.
And also to get rid of some of the logos on the plastic.

    Front panel

    [IMG][/IMG]

    Side panel

    [IMG][/IMG]

After sanding all the areas I was going to paint I brushed down the excess dust and prepared the cans by using Bill Owen's tip of placing the cans in hot water first for 10 minutes.

The main colours I am using for this mod are copper and black. The front panel I sprayed first in copper and black.

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

Before I sprayed the side panel I cut out the gothic arch and rectangle to house one of the Warhammer buildings walls.

Then I sprayed copper from one corner diagonally across the panel to get a blending effect from copper to black.

    [IMG][/IMG]

Once this was done I finished of the spraying by spraying the main case black to get rid of any scratches.

    [IMG][/IMG]

In the end the front panel look like this...

    [IMG][/IMG]

    Next time warhammer attachments :D

For detail in certain areas I used some Warhammer 40k buildings due to there gothic nature. I started by assembling the each of the panels and then painting them so that they look old and worn, adding several layers of black wash to get this effect.

    [IMG][/IMG]

    [IMG][/IMG]

Once the parts had been painted and dried I mounted the one with the chimney on the front panel, having to trim it slightly to fit.

    [IMG][/IMG]

Another piece was placed in the side panel, so after I had cut out the right sized hole with my jig saw I glued it in using Araldite.

More will be on the way.... :thumb:

nice paint work! I like that there are openings around the buildings to let light out. Will you cut out any of the building windows to increase that effect? Are you still going to have an optical drive?

good work so far... I like it.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments new up date is going to be up soon.

I plan for the disc drive to be behind a panel which mechanically comes out the side. Its hard to explain but in the next update there will be a sketch up model of it.

Thanks for all the comments everyone :thumb:

In this post I am continuing work on the side panel. The Gothic window will start to get more detailed and also I begin to start making my 'steam engine' out of an old fan.

So first I made some plasticard outlines around the Warhammer piece and Gothic window in the side panel in order to make them stand out more.

    [IMG][/IMG]

I then painted this in a dark brown in order to make them blend in more with the case.

    [IMG][/IMG]

I now cut out the rough shape of the pillar which is going in the window out of plasticard, sprayed it black and then added some detail with Warhammer and more plasticard.

    [IMG][/IMG]

I now started to paint this with multiple layers of bronze. Going from dark to light highlighting the very edges with silver.

    [IMG][/IMG]

    The pillar inside the window.

    [IMG][/IMG]

Then I started to work on the 'Steam Engine' the piston being some old copper pipe.

    [IMG][/IMG]

Next I cut out the sides old the fan which will drive the gear.

    [IMG][/IMG]

The next job on this list is to try and slow the fan down and to add detail to the piston.

    :hehe:

most computers have a way to control the fan speed either through the bios or the OS. It shouldn't be a problem to slow it down though if you want it to drive a significant load like a set of gears then it may not have enough torque using that method since it will reduce the power to the fan :/ Fan motors are designed to be high speed/low torque... driving it at low speed and high torque will be very inefficient. It's about impedance matching. Personally I'd use a belt and cams to drive the gears so you can step the power from high speed/low torque to low speed/high torque without reducing the speed or power of the motor. :)

bit like this but you would need a bigger ratio... more like 10:1.

nice mod so far looking forward to more
and sir steam, that is a really good idea, but for a steam punk mod would look sweet with gears instead of belts?
so pretty much same thing, just few gears in the middle ( just be a pain making sure geared enough to spin at a decent speed :p

or if dont really need the airflow, a flywheel would look sweet :p

might have todo a steam punk buiild soon haha
