    Warning: Long....

Well after finishing my first year of college i've decided to get a laptop to start the second year...... I've done some searching but maybe i missed something.....

    To help you help me:

    Requirements :

Around USD$1000 (no more than $1100)
    at least 512mb of RAM
    40 or 80GB hard drive
    cd-burner
    wireless internet + wired internet
also wouldn't hurt if it played some game like:
    Counter-strike (HL,DOD, etc) Quake 3
    Battlefield 1942 Unreal Tournament
    Trackmania Dungeon Seige
and maybe Half-Life2 (if it can be done around $1000)

Must be able to do photoshop 7 + visual basic

Must have similar performance to my current computer (2nd line in sig, the P4)
    ---------------------- End of requirements-------------------

    What i've found so far:

    HP pavillion from walmart

    Averatec from sam's

however, the second one is from a not-well-known company, at least by me
and i'm not sure but i don't think it can take any more memory (incase of an upgrade)

I'll be looking for agreements on these or reccommendations of other laptops

I'd also like to get this from a store near me, such as:
    walmart
    sam's club
    staples
    comp usa
    best buy
    radioshack
    circut city

so if its on their websites i can get it from the store......

im lan party manager for the college and id like to use it at the parties (to play)

also my major is computer repair technology

    college starts august 29

if you need any more info lemme know

I would check out discountlaptops.com as most of the time there laptops beat the prices of Dell and other OEMs

How about one of the Voodoo laptops? They are alot more expensive than what you are hoping for, but they will definatnly fill your requirements. They have 3 different classes, lightweight, middleweight and heavyweight.

    walmart=sam's

    Sam's is just better.

Ok Back on topic, toshiba's and dells (*shudders using the name dell on a modding forum*) have always been great for the people that I have known who have bought one. As for the voodo ones, you need to take out a 2nd morgage just the make the monthly payments :hehe:

my friends dad bought an averatec widescreen laptop and loves it. he is a doctor and spends a lot of time doing paperwork on his laptop. he killed a compaq and a powerbook in a year and a half, the averatec has outlasted them both. i doubt you could play much games on that little one you linked to, though.
also, dell laptops are really good value.

    Dell factory outlet?

Get a gig of ram, or 1 stick of 512 with room to upgrade later.

Would the HP pavillion that i linked to be good enough?
the graphics are "intel extreme graphics 2 64MB" is that similar to my radeon 9200? better? worse?
and is there any way to increase the 64MB?

The pavillion can be upgraded to a pentium M 745 (1.8ghz) and 1GB ram if i need to, which isn't bad imo seeing as how my current proc is a pentium 4 1.6 with only 400mhz fsb and not 1 mb cache......(it was free)

i just need a base that will meet my requirements (im paying for college)
if it is on the same level or better than my current (hopefully)
Half-Life 2 is not a requirement -- just a "it would be nice"
    my radeon 9200 plays it.....

id have to look into dells some also....

the asus are nice, but once i minimally configure it its over my price...

no on the voodoo (of course if someone GAVE me one i wouldn't mind.....)

Also remember that id like to get from a store near me....
right now im in the states at Watkins Glen, NY 14891 (so you can use a store locator)

and stick to the price range(instant rebates are ok, mail-ins are not)

sorry if i seem too be knocking everyone's idea's, but what i really want to see is your opinion on my choices so far... and if you don't like them reccommend me a lappy that will suit my needs and that i can get near me

EDIT: sorry about that i didn't know where to put it

Just out of curiosity why are you averse to purchasing one over the internet or using Mail-In rebates? You can usually get more computer for your money that way.

well id rather get my hands on it to test it (thats why stores near me)
don't have to worry about a flaky vendor....
i would be incliened(SP?) to buy online from dell, alienware etc online as they are good companies....

just not discountlaptop.com or similar as i have not done business with them before...

as for mail-in im not against them, but in the past i've not always got my money back for them...

the budget is very strict (no more than $1100) so as long as its 1100 or less before mail-ins its ok

If thats the case, I would deffinitely look into Dell, very few people can beat their prices, and you might check CompUSA as they have some great deals on laptops from time to time.

I'm going to recomment 2 places

    1) Cyber Power PC's (cyberpowerpcs.com)
Very competitive pricing with high end equip

    and

    2) Sager Notebooks (sagernotebooks.com)
I built mine there and it came to about $1900 but and runs BF2, HL2, Doom3, SWG - every new game out so far basically without a hitch, I'm sure you can build one for what you want $$ wise

instead of just showing me places to go to buy a laptop, could you guys please config me a laptop from the place that would suit my needs (along with price) because i could fine a place to buy a laptop in my spare time. i rather see what componet configs you guys would reccommend, in my budget, and where i could get that spec from...

Hope that clarified my path with this thread....

Any comments on the Athlon 64 Pavillion that i posted?
as long as the graphics would run the games that i listed (not inc. HL2) that might be the one otherwise ill wait and see what you guys come up with.....

    Thanks so far.....

I have an averatec at home, and let me tell you I haven't had a problem with it since buying it. Its the 1.6ghz centrino with an 80gig drive, DVD burner, 512mb of ram, etc....., it does allow for another stick of 512 ram, and runs san andreas just fine. Dont just go by the name or their technical support, but go on first hand experience like mine. I bought it at circuit city about 6 months ago for less than 1,000$ and im proud to say that you wont find a better system anywhere for that kind of money.
