I think it's just to show us his hardware, In the other pictures the side panel is on.

    Looks good Minimal_Fuss :)

I'm not talking about side panels.

The 550D has panels over all the fan mounts. so it's a choice of panels OR fans on the front, side and TOP. In you leave the panels on your only get rear fans.

Poor design to me, they should have used some kind of find mesh, or a raised panel so it looked good and you could have fans....not either or.

It's such a beautiful quiet case. But I'd want a panel open somewhere and underneath it hideous, if only they could have put a little more thought into what's under the panels I'd buy it in an instant.

    Beautiful:

But only old sound-force north-bridge could output sp/dif raw signal, so your onboard sound is decoding the sound before sending it out to the DAC via the coax?

Unless the USB connection allows audio signal to bypass the on-board sound-card? In which case I need to get myself a new USB DAC.

I'm really into audio, so please take this as a interested query rather than me knocking your setup.

I am not a specialist in audio but usb dacs are quite common as far as I know

    I want one :(

I realise that, I just wanted to know what quality of sound was actually transmitted via usb to the dac.

Turn's out it's USB audio class 2 (up to 24 bits / 192 kHz), which isn't bad at all :)

Most top end recording studios that are not kitted out with Pro Tools will transmit the audio signal via firewire or USB, so there should be no loss in quality. I have a MOTU 896HD firewire I/O audio interface myself.

That's true, but it's a case of what travels down your usb.

As with Sp/dif outputs very few mobos actually output sp/dif RAW, most actually decode it first and then output sp/dif PCM....many people mistakenly believe that if they hook up an amp to a computers on-board sp/dif socket that the amp is decoding the signal.

There was onyl ever one chipset (SoundStorm on Nfroce2) that was capable of outputting sp/dif raw (so that the DAC or Amp could use it's won decoder).

Hence I wondered if a USB dac was able to bypass this issue as it essentially still used on-board data. But researching it, it appears likely that the raw data is transmitted via usb and never reaches the on-board audio decoding. Similar results can be achieved via wireless DACs, but not by Coax or Sp/Dif dacs as again they aren't capable of pass-through.

My desk about 5 minutes ago:

My wife didn't want to be pictured but is now hard at work on NHS year end accounts (truely shocking how bad they are but I digress) - taking over my Eyefinity setup as well. :eeek:

I am relegated to my work laptop, a single screen feels so restrictive.

And yet another question about your setup:
What is the length of that desk?
I'm looking at getting a 160cm desk but it needs to fit an AV receiver, a case and a couple of monitors.

    Thanks,
    /Dante

I'm excited to sleep in my giant bed tonight!

I'm thinking about getting a new area rug and desk that is wider and deeper so I have more workspace and I need a proper stand / shelf for my monitor but the stack of paper works for now so it's fine!

    Unfortunately, no.

I'd really like to have a cool vintage clock, but I don't have one. I just got a plastic replica on Amazon. From a few feet away it gives the same feel as a real one, but when you get close you can see that it's not weathered wood, it's just plastic with streaks painted on, and it's not yellowed parchment, it's printer paper with yellow ink.
