https://www.overclock3d.net/news/software/the_mafia_trilogy_is_getting_remastered_remade/1 Of all of the games that really do need a makeover Mafia is probably in my top 3. The gameplay was just light years ahead of everything else, and I would strongly imagine would easily hold up now. In fact, I will go out on a limb and say it was one of the best games of that era, and miles better than Mafia 2. Please oh please don't mess this up.
I'd heard they were doing 2, and while 2 was awesome, I had hoped it would be 1. I just hope that they do the full games and not cut them down and splice all 3 together, because I have no interest in playing 3. Although I'd rather a new one set in the period between 1 and 2.
3 was so very bad. They gutted all of the unique parts and just made it a generic open world game! I gave up after a few hours because I was just bored! I really like 2, I think the story was great, but the lack of side missions (which they stripped out for DLC) really hurt it. I loved the speed limiting mechanic, and that police would chase you for speeding, and I WISH other games did it!
I had no interest in it because it seemed very much like a crap GTA, the period just seemed too modern. The first 2 were great because of the period and the cars drove like absolute donkeys which gave it a real challenge, especially with the speed limit mechanic. I never used the limiter during a mission because i felt like it was cheating, but would if i was aimlessly pootling about.
It's a shame because for the first few hours 3 was amazing. The story was absolutely brilliant, the best by far. Then it just became incredibly repetitive. The first one is still the best IMO. Looks terrible now though, but looking at the screenies I've seen OMG.
So the "remaster" of Mafia II is available (free if you own the original): Can you tell which ones are from the original and which from the "remaster"? (all taken at max in game settings, no mods)
Remastering PS3 gen games is a bit of a mug's game, but Mafia 1 is a great game version of Goodfellas, Mafia 2 was memorable, and Mafia 3 isn't a Mafia game but still pretty fun.
I actually quite liked 3, although I didn't play it until all the DLC was out and it had had about a dozen patches. It got very, very repetitive toward the end, but I liked it more than 2, where every time a cutscene cut in, I knew I was about to get forced into another "choice" that went against everything Vito supposedly had stood for. Stitched up, backstabbed and double crossed... every step of the way, and just taking it; then doubling down on the stupidity. I'm glad the remaster was free. I'd be quite annoyed if I'd paid for it. I never completed the "classic" Mafia 2, because it would always crash on me at the exact same spot in... whatever chapter it was after the one in prison. The speed limiter is a massive cheat, too - it slows you down so fast it's better than using the brakes! The great thing about all three was the music. It's doing something weird for me. The Store lists me as owning it, but it doesn't appear in my games list until I install it via the Steam Store. I get awarded achievements, but they aren't appearing in my Steam history.
